1. Since our beloveds departed,

    they have banished our sleep.

  2. So after them, they have not dried—

    the eyelids, wet with their tears.

  3. They departed; and my heart, wherever

    they are, has a home.

  4. Its yearnings have not grown still,

    while they dwell within it.

  5. I conceal my love for them—but can

    there be concealment with weeping?

  6. How many a departing maiden

    the camel-litters carried away!

  7. Her sides sway;

    the bān trees are bewildered by her.

  8. Her buttocks quiver;

    the sand dunes envy her.

  9. The gazelles have neither her neck

    nor her drowsy gaze.

  10. How far apart! How can the spear's butt compare with

    what the spearhead has attained?

  11. And her cheek was lent

    Lebanon's apples.

  12. And in her two cheeks were laid

    the gardens' roses.

  13. On her chest are two breasts, envied

    by the pomegranates.

  14. For she is resplendent with the best of what

    makes a garden resplendent.

  15. No longer delightful, after them,

    are that sanctuary and the bān trees.

  16. And after Nuʿm, no longer

    does Naʿmān stir my longing.

  17. No, nor Wajra, since

    the gazelles are not there.

  18. Wine—as though

    pure gold had melted in it.

  19. So the sober one is the loser, then,

    and the drunken one the winner.

  20. So fill the cup for me, for my heart

    is full of sorrow.

  21. It was with the prophet Noah

    when the Flood came.

  22. Its bubbles are Mālik to me,

    and love of it is Riḍwān.

  23. And this world, to us,

    is a beloved adorned.

  24. And her saliva is nothing but

    what the wine jars have spat out.

  25. Through drinking it are bestowed upon us

    repose and sweet basil.

  26. From one called the All-Forgiving

    forgiveness is hoped for.

  27. My lord Badr al-Dīn, may

    time never oppose you.

  28. And may you endure as long as

    Thahlān stands in its place.

  29. May the Qurʾān guard you from

    what the conjunction brings about,

  30. when we see Jupiter

    in conjunction with Saturn.

  31. In a realm whose sultan

    has no equal among sultans.

  32. You are the youth whom

    Fityān excels at praising.
