1. وأُلْبِسَتِ الأَطلالُ بَعدَكَ وَحْشَةً

    وكيفَ يكونُ الغِمْدُ فَارَقَهُ النَّصْلُ

    And ruins were clothed in loneliness after you

    How can a sheath be when the sword has left it

  2. فَما الدَّارُ دَارٌ وَهْيَ منكَ خَلِيَّةٌ

    وَلا صَحْبُها صَحْبٌ ولا أَهْلُها أَهْلُ

    The house is no home once you've gone from it

    Neither its company nor people are real company or people

  3. تَبدّلَتِ الأسْحارُ فيها هَواجراً

    وأَصبحَ نَاراً عِنْدَهَا الماءُ والظِّلُّ

    Dawn has turned deceptive there

    Water and shade have become fire

  4. فُرُوعٌ ذَوَتْ لمَّا ذَوَيتَ وإنَّما

    يكونُ بَقاءُ الفَرْعِ مَا بَقِيَ الأَصْلُ

    Branches withered when you withered

    The branch endures only as long as the root
