بَانَ عَليَّ الكِبَرُ
وَغَيَّرتني الغِيَرُ
Old age has plainly shown on me,
and fortune’s changes have changed me.
وَصَارَ مَن يَنظُرني
يَقُولُ هذا عُمَرُ
Whoever looks at me is bewildered
and says, “Is this ʿUmar?”
أينَ اهِتزارٌ كالقضي
بِ اللَّدّنِ حِينَ أَخطُرُ
Where is my graceful swaying, like a
supple bough, when I used to strut?
وقولُهُمْ عِندَ الصِّبا
تَاللّهِ ماذا بَشَرُ
And where is what they said in my youth:
“By God, what a man!”
تَقُوُّسُ الظَهرِ وَمَا
غَيْرُ العصا لي وَتَرُ
My back has curved into a bow, and I have
no bowstring but my staff.
وَليسَ لي مِن الغَوا
ني اليومَ سَهْمٌ يُذْكَرُ
Nor have I, among beautiful
women today, a share worth mentioning.
