شَكَارَ قَد آلَيْتَ عَيْني فِداهُ
فَقَلْبُ المُتيّمِ قَلْبٌ شَفِيقُ
You have saddened my eyes, may I sacrifice myself for him,
For the heart of the bereaved is a kind heart.
وَقالَ أَمِنْتُ بِشِعْريتي
وَبيني وَبينَكُمُ سِتْرٌ رَقِيقُ
And I said “I have trusted in my poetry”,
While between you and me there is a thin veil.
وَمَا سَرْدُ داودَ مِنى يَقيِكَ
وَأَنتَ بِأَسهُمِ لَحظي رَشِيقُ
The chanting of David does not protect me from you,
While you are skillful in aiming at my glances.
