مَدَحْنَاهُمْ بِسُحْتٍ عَن

مُحَالٍ وَاهِيَ السَّبَبِ

We praised them excessively for no reason, out of vanity.

If you ask about their faults, we reached them out of wonder.

فَإنْ تَسْأَلْ بِنَاوَبِهِمْ

وَصلانا هُمْ مِن العَجَبِ

They submitted to flattery, and listened to lies.

فَأَكَّالُونَ لِلسُّحْتِ

وَسَمَّاعُونَ لِلكَذِبِ
