نَفِدَ الزَّيْتُ الذي جُدْتَ بهِ
لِسِراجٍ لكَ وَقَّادِ الذَّكاءِ
The oil with which you filled
The lamp for your guidance and intellect's flame
ذِي لِسانٍ لَكَ رَطْبٍ بالذِي
طاب من حَمْدٍ وشُكْرٍ وَثَناءِ
Has run out, its tongue parched
That sang your praises and thanks and acclaim.
وَهْوَ أمسى في ذُراكُمْ آمِناً
مِنْ هَوًى يَغدُو عليهِ أَوْ هَوَاءِ
It lies safe through the night
In your abode from whims or passions vain,
غَيرَ أَنَّ السُّرْجَ تَحتاجُ إلى
أَنْ يُزادَ الزّيْتُ في لَيلِ الشِّتاءِ
Save that lamps need more fuel
On winter nights amidst wind and rain.
