أَمِيرٌ لهُ طَلْعَةٌ طَالَما

بَدَتْ قَمَراً تَحتَ لَيلِ التَّمامِ

A prince with a radiant visage that has long

Appeared like a moon beneath the dark of night's completeness.

يُطاعِنُ بِالرأْي قَبلَ السِّنانِ

وَيَضرِبُ بِالعَزْمِ قَبلَ الحُسامِ

He strikes with opinion before the spears,

And with resolve before the swords.

وَيَقتادُها ضُمَّراً كالرِّياحِ

حُشِيَ البَرْقُ مِن خَلفِها في ضَرامِ

He leads them calmly like the winds,

Lightning flashing behind them in the darkness.

يَطِيرُ بِها العَزْمُ دُونَ السِّياطِ

وَيُمسِكُها الزَّجْرُ دُونَ اللِّجامِ

Resolve makes them fly without need of whips,

And rebuke holds them without need of reins.

وَنَنسُبُ تَهذِيبَ تَأْدِيبهنَّ

لِتَهذِيبِ فُرسانِهِنَّ الكِرامِ

And we attribute the refinement of their training

To the refinement of their generous horsemen.
