I am amid two delights, both from my own garden,
when I am alone there, away from myself—and with my sweet basil beside me:
my bird. The heart of anyone it sings to is more apt
than the bird itself, when song begins, to take wing.
My singer pours into listening ears whatever
melodies they have wished for—and whatever they have not.
It wears a robe of iris and a shirt
buttoned upon it by the two Tishrins.
Its back has clothed itself in the sky’s own hue,
and upon its neck the two Farqad stars appear.
