What need have I to carry knives? My renown—
whenever I recall it—is enough for me.
By what manner of gallantry would I fail
to tear out the soul of whoever dares challenge me?
Look out! My hand is my dagger. Find me
a man of mettle, his brother, or one fit to be my brother.
I am nothing but iron—so how
can you say that iron harms me?
As for devils, they are the ones who fear me,
for I am the scourge of devils.
Come, bring me a rogue who can withstand me,
or bring near a rogue who can match me.
Away with you! If I merely breathed upon a youth
in Egypt, I would send him flying to China.
I am the valiant Zanki—he knows me,
whoever confronts me when conflict comes.
Were Iblis to seek to duel me
with lance, sword, and battle-axe,
I would not cry out in panic like some rash fellow:
“Bring my spear! Bring my knife!”
Were death embodied, it would die for fear of me,
and I would reach it before it reached me.
So join me in wantonness and play, O
you who, as you stand, are no equal of mine.
In every kind of roguery, no one
who vies with me can catch me.
Why should I not cast off restraint and run
with revelry through the open squares?
Indeed, the boy with whom I have fallen in love—
I obey him in love, while he disobeys me.
He sways beneath his robe from slenderness,
like a bough in delicacy and suppleness.
Possessed of a pride that has sorely tormented his lover,
more fiercely than the pride of sultans.
Why, then, do I delay cutting his trouser-cord,
if untying it will not yield to me?
Woe is me for the arch of his brows and for
the languor of his eyes, time after time.
Death lies nowhere but in two roses risen
upon his cheeks, both wreathed in eglantine.
How many a censor has reproached me! I said to him,
“Enough! Reproach only tempts me further.”
Do you think I alone have gone mad? No—
how many kindred spirits I have among the mad!
