1. To a gloater over Abū Isḥāq, I said to them all:

    If he has died, death is decreed for all humankind.

  2. He passed as a cloud passes, leaving a trace;

    but you will pass with neither substance nor trace.

  3. The loss of one like you is the loss of the raincloud, for

    in losing him lies the loss of hearing and sight.

  4. If eclipse’s phantom has never visited al-Suhā,

    you have indeed seen the sun and moon eclipsed.

  5. And amid the blackness, the dwellings’ darkness calls attention

    to the whiteness of radiant virtues in the graves.
