1. هوىً ضقتُ به ذرعاً

    وذكرٌ هاجَ لي ذكرا

    A passion I was utterly consumed by,

    And a memory that vividly stirs longing in me,

  2. وضرٌّ كلما قلتُ

    تَقَضَّى زادني ضُرَّا

    And a harm, whenever I complain of it,

    Increases my hurt and makes it more bitter,

  3. سقى القطرُ ربىً ما زل

    ت أَستسقي لها القَطْرَا

    The rain clouds watered a meadow of mine,

    Yet still I beseech them for more showers,

  4. تصبرتُ ولكنْ لم

    أجِدْ عن حَلَبٍ صبرا

    I showed patience, but could find

    No patience to wean me off yearning.

  5. فما أسلو بغادينَ

    ولا أملُّ بأصفرا

    So I have no joy in the departing,

    Nor hope in the returning,

  6. ولا أمنح بابليَّ

    ولا العافيةَ الهجرا

    No pleasure in estrangement,

    Nor well-being in separation.

  7. بنفسي قصرُ بطياسٍ

    وما قد جاورَ القصرا

    My soul is a palace at Buthyan,

    Neighbouring no other palace,

  8. إلى أعلى قويقٍ حي

    ث يلقى نَهْرُهُ نهرا

    At the top of Mount Ghawyq, where

    Its river meets with a river.

  9. ربىً أشْبَهْنَ في منظ

    رهنَّ المرجَ والعُمْرا

    My meadow resembles, to the beholder,

    Marj and Omar,

  10. وروضٌ يَلْبَسُ الوشي

    إذا ما لَبِسَ الزهرا

    And a garden that wears adornments,

    Whenever it wears flowers.

  11. يريك الحمر والصفر

    تباهي الحمرَ والصُّفرا

    You see the red and yellow

    Vying with the red and the yellow,

  12. شقيقٌ يخطفُ الأَبصا

    ر من صُغْرَى ومنْ كبرى

    Chamomile that snatches sights

    From the small and fully-grown.

  13. دمىً يَقْنِصْنُ بالأَلحا

    ظِ منها البكر والبكرا

    My blood-red anemones take aim

    At their cheeks’ virgin redness.

  14. بَدَتْ في حُلَلٍ خُضْرٍ

    تفوقُ الحللَ الخُضْرا

    They appeared in green gowns,

    Transcending all green gowns,

  15. ترى نرجسةً ترنو

    إلى نحوِ أختها شَزْرا

    You see a narcissus leaning

    Towards her sister, the lily.

  16. ووردٌ نثرَ الطلُّ

    عليه دُرَّهُ نَثْرا

    A rose whose buds

    Shed their pearls profusely,

  17. إِذا ما الأقحوانُ افت

    رَّ عنه خلتَهُ ثَغْرا

    When the cheeks parted,

    Baring the redness inside.

  18. إذا مالتْ بها الريحُ

    فأدنتها من الأخرى

    When the wind inclined towards them,

    Bringing one closer to the other,

  19. حسبنا أنها أصغت

    لكي تُودِعَها سِرّا

    We'd think it had made her listen

    So it may confide something to her.

  20. ومما يسحرُ الصبَّ

    وإن لم يحسنِ السحرا

    That which captivates the self,

    Even if unable to perform magic,

  21. بهارٌ ما رآه التب

    رُ إلا أَخجلَ التبرا

    Is a wondrous splendor never before

    Seen by the land that left it dazzled.

  22. غريباتٌ من النَّوْرِ

    تفوقُ البدوُ والحضرا

    Strange highlights,

    Rarer than deserts or settled lands,

  23. وما تلك أبا بكرٍ

    وإن جاوزتِ القدرا

    And you, Abu Bakr, are none other

    Even if you surpass all measures.

  24. بأحلى منكَ في القلبِ

    ولا أبهى ولا أسرى

    None is sweeter to my heart,

    None more glorious or secretly enjoyed.

  25. فإن أبدلتني بالسَّهْ

    لِ من أخلاقِكَ الوعرا

    So if you replace my smooth ride

    With ruggedness in your ways,

  26. وعاد الحلوُ من وُدِّ

    ك لي فيما مضى مُرَّا

    And the sweetness of your affection

    Turns bitter, as in days gone by,

  27. إذا ما زِدْتُكَ الآنَ

    وفاءً زِدْتَني غدرا

    If I now increase my loyalty to you,

    You increase your betrayal of me,

  28. فما تسمعُ لي قولاً

    ولا تقبلُ لي عُذْرا

    Not listening to anything I say,

    Or accepting any excuse from me,

  29. كأني إِذ أُناجيك

    أُناجي طَلَلاً قَفْرا

    It is as though, when I confide in you,

    I am confiding in an empty ruin,

  30. وكم لي من أخٍ إن جئ

    تُ مشياً جاءني حُضْرا

    And I have many a brother who, if I walked to him,

    Would come running to me,

  31. وإن أُول جميلاً مً

    رَّةً يُولِ بهِ عَشْرا

    And if I asked him a favour but once,

    He obliges me tenfold.

  32. وما لي فيك إلا الصب

    رُ ساءَ الدهرُ أو سرَّا

    I have none in you but patience-

    Whether time brought joy or sorrow.

  33. لعل اللهَ أن يجع

    لَ بعد العُسْرِ لي يُسْرا

    May God make ease follow hardship

    And bring comfort after adversity.

  34. على أَنِّيَ ما أزج

    رُ عنك الحمدَ والشكرا

    Still, I shall never cease to thank

    And praise your nature,

  35. ونشري نَشْرَ أخلاقِ

    كَ ما اسطعتُ له نَشْرا

    Propagating your ethics

    As vigorously as I can.
