يومٌ بفارثَ حُسنُه لا يُدفَعُ

يومٌ أغرُّ من الزمانِ مُلَمَّعُ

A day whose beauty cannot be repelled

A day more brilliant than time adorned

يومٌ بديباج الغيوم وَوشيِهِ

يا صاحبيَّ مجلَّلٌ وَمُبَرقَع

A day clad in the garb of clouds and their fixings

My friend, bejeweled and embroidered

يومٌ كأن الشمس فيه خريدةٌ

حسناءُ من خَلَل السُّجوف تَطلَّع

A day when it seems the sun therein is

A beautiful purchase seen through the litters

يومٌ حدت ناياتُه عيدانَهُ

حَدْواً بمحثوثِ الغناءِ يشْيَّعُ

A day whose flutes sharpened their reeds

Sharpened with the warbles of singing propagated

جالستُ فيه أبا الحسين بمجلسٍ

خِلَعُ الربيعِ على رُباهُ تُخلَع

I sat in it with Abul Hussein in a session

Like spring raiment donned on its folks doffed

جلساؤه فيه هِزَبرٌ ضيغمٌ

وغضنفرٌ صارٍ وأَغلبُ أَرْوَع

Its sitters therein are soft pearls

Agates, topazes, and most splendid jacinth

فخلعتُ فيه عذارَ لهوٍ لم يكن

في غيره من قبلِ ذلك يُخلع

So I doffed in it the adornment of delights not

Doffed before that in others

بمخنَّثِينَ مُصنَّعين كأنهمْ

لُعَبٌ بأيدي اللاعبات تُصَنَّع

With the effeminate artificially made as if they are

Dolls played with by playing girls constructed

بمؤنثين مزوَّرين وإِنني

بهوى المزوَّر في الإِناث لمولع

With counterfeit feminines, and I am

Passionate for counterfeit among females infatuated

وَمُطَرَّرين مُعَقربي أصداغهم

فوق الخدود عقارباً لا تَلْسَع

And glossed with their moles above the cheeks

Like scorpions that do not sting tattooed

ناياتُهم تبعاً لقول طبولهم

وطبولُهُم في قولها تَتنطَّع

Their flutes accordingly to the words of their drums

And their drums in their words embellished

وإذا تَغنَّوا في سرَيْجِيَّاتِهمْ

والكاسُ تسجدُ والقناني تركع

And when they sing in their musical modes

The cup bows down and the jugs kneel

والراحُ تُخْدَع بالمزاج وإنما

من حيث تحسبها ستُخدَع تَخدَع

And the wine is duped by euphony but

It is from where you reckon it shall be duped duped

تدعو السرورَ وإن نأى فيجيبُها

عجلاً وتَشفَعُ عنده فتُشفَّع

It invites joy and if it becomes remote it promptly answers

And intercedes on its behalf so it intercedes

في فَيءِ بستان يؤزَّر روضهُ

بِمُفوَّفات بُرُودِه وَيُقَنَّع

In the shade of an orchard whose meadow is girdled

With its cool burdas and it gratifies

فيه الدراهمُ والدنانيرُ التي

أبداً على شكلٍ سواءٍ تُطْبَع

Therein are dirhams and dinars

That are constantly stamped in equal form

قَطَعَتْ طريقَ الطَّرْفِ خَيْريّاتُه

بطرائفٍ عما سواها تُقْطَع

Its boons cut off the path of the glance

With subtleties beyond others severed

وبديعُ خُرَّمِهِ ولم أَخْرِمْ به

في الحُكْمِ من كلِّ البدائعِ أبدع

And the wonder of its fertility without my piercing

In ruling among all wonders the most wondrous created

وكأنّ عيدَ الوردِ فيه عندنا

بل ليس يَجْمَعُ عندنا ما يَجْمَع

And it is as if our feast of roses therein

But no it does not gather what it gathers

ورقٌ من الياقوتِ فيه مُلَزَّقٌ

ذا مُشْربٌ لوناً وهذا مُشْبَع

Paper made of ruby therein glued

This saturated in color and that saturated

وكأنّ نَوْرَ الآسِ في أوراقِهِ

نورُ الكواكبِ في ظلامٍ يلمع

And it is as if the brilliance of candied fruit in its leaves

Is the planets’ light in darkness radiating

يحبوك آذريونه بزبرجدٍ

رطبٍ بأقماعِ العقيقِ يُقَمَّع

Azaris love you with fresh

Moist pomegranate sprayers stuffed

وعيونُ نَرْجِسِهِ متى تدمعْ ندىً

فعلى خدودٍ من شقيقٍ تدمع

And the eyes of its narcissi when dewed with juice

Dew upon cheeks of wallflowers dewed

بالأقحوان مجزِّعٌ بالزعفرا

نِ ملمَّعٌ بالبَهْرَمانِ مُرَصَّع

Checkered with yellow blossoms speckled with saffron

Embroidered with sweet basil garnished

للطيرِ فيه صنوفُ أصواتِ فذا

يدعو وذا يحدو وهذا يَسْجَع

The birds therein have wondrous voices

This one invites, that sings, and the other elegizes

لم يَقْتنِ النعمانُ قطُّ شبيهَهُ

فيما اقتناهُ ولا اقتناه تُبَّع

Al-Nu’man never possessed its like

In what he possessed nor what he was copied

وقبالة الندماءِ حيثُ تقابلوا

منه حيث يَرى النديمُ ويسمَع

And facing the drinking companions when they faced off

From it when the boon companion sees and hears

فلَكٌ من الدُّولاب فيه كواكبٌ

من مائه تنقض ساعة تطْلُع

A sphere from the contraption therein are planets

From its water every hour rise

متلوِّن الأصوات يخفض صوتَه

بغنائِه طوراً وطوراً يَرفع

Diverse in voices, it lowers its voice

At times with its singing and elevates at others

أبداً حنينُ النِّيبِ فيه مرَدَّدٌ

أبداً زئيرُ الأسْدِ فيه مرجَّع

The longing of the flute constantly reverberated therein

The roar of the lion constantly echoed

والبركة الحسناءُ فيما بيننا

ملأى تُجَوشَن تارةً وَتُدَرَّع

And blessings galore amongst us

At times overflowing and armored at others

رأتِ الحضورَ لِعُرْسِها فتصنَّعَتْ

إن العروسَ لِعُرْسها تَتَصَنَّع

Saw the attendance for its wedding so it adorned itself

The bride for her wedding adorns herself

يا نُبْلَها من بركةٍ لم تعدُ بل

لم يَعْدُها في النُّبْلِ بحرٌ مُتْرَع

O its nobility from blessings not limited

But no sea contained in nobility bounded

ما لاحتِ الجوزاءُ إِلا خلتُها

وكواكبُ الجوزاءِ فيها تَكْرَع

No sooner did the Gemini rise therein

But I found it vacant, and Gemini's stars roamed

وترى السماءَ كما تراها فهي في ال

مرْأى تغيِّمُ ساعةً وتَقَشَّع

And you see the sky as you see it, so it is in view

At times clouded, and at others serene

لا يقطع الغوّاصُ أدنى غَمرها

حتى تَرَى أوصالَهُ تتقطَّع

No diver cuts its lowest depth

Until you see his limbs severed

ويضيقُ ذرعاً بالتوسُّطِ وَسْطُها

فيحيدُ عنه السابحُ المتذرِّع

And it straits the breaststroker in its midst

So the swimmer in armor deviates from it

لكنها في جَنبِ جودكَ دَمعَةٌ

من مقلةٍ لم يحْتَسِبْها المدمع

But it is in comparison to your munificence a tear

From an eyelid the weeping did not account

من يا عليّ أبا الحسين يقولُ مَنْ

يا هاشميُّ كما أَقولُ وتصنع

Who, O Ali Abu al-Hussein, can say who

O Hashimite like I say and you create

قولٌ وفعلٌ لستُ أدري أيّما

مَن ذا وَمن ذا أنت فيه أسرع

Words and deeds I know not which of the two

Who is this and who is that you therein faster

أترى أباك محمداً تابَعتَ أم

أتراك جَدَّكَ حمزةً تَتَتَبَّع

Do you see your father Muhammad emulated

Or see your grandfather Hamzah traced

ما إِن أُبالي يا فدتك عشيرتي

من واقعاتِ نوائب تُتُوقَّع

I do not care, my ransom, about my lineage

From afflicting catastrophes expected

إذ صار عند سواك طولُ إِقامتي

ضرراً عليَّ وصار عندك يَنفَع

As my prolonged stay became

Harmful to me in other than you and beneficial with you

إِبْقُوْا بني العباس ما بَقِيَ الحصى

لندىً يؤمَّلُ أو لخرقٍ يُرْقَع

Remain O Abbasids what remains of pebbles

For dew hoped or rags patched

عاداتكمْ في مجدكمْ عاداتكمْ

وطريقكمُ فيه الطريقُ المهْيَع

Are your customs in your glory your customs

And your path in it the awe-inspiring path

لله درُّ أبي الحسينِ فتىً به

يرتاعُ رَيْبُ الدَّهْرِ حينَ يُرَوَّع

To God is Ali Abu al-Hussein’s bounty a lad

Before whom the vicissitudes of fate startled when panicked

عادتْ به حلبٌ إلى عاداتِها

وحلا به المصطافُ والمتربَّع

Aleppo returned through him to its customs

And the Chosen One and the Enthroned settled through him

رَحُبَتْ عليَّ وكنتُ قد ألفيتُني

منها وما فيه لرحليَ موضع

It became spacious for me though I had gotten used to it

For my belongings no place therein

لم آتِ فارثَ مُجْمِعاً للقائِهِ

إلا تلقَّاني التفضُّل اجْمَع

I did not come to a Fārith’s assembly gathering

Except honor’s nobility altogether welcomed me

كم لي بفارثَ عنده من مرتعٍ

ما طاب لي مذ لم أَزُرهُ مَرتَع

How many pastures with him do I have

That never tasted good when not roamed

زَرْعُ البلادِ مآكلٌ ومشاربٌ

وزروعُ فارثَ مكرُماتٌ تُزرَع

Crops of countries are edibles and potables

And Fārith’s crops are bestowed bounties sowed

يُدْني التشوّقُ ربَّها فكأنما

مِيلي إليه من التشوق إِصبع

Yearning brings his Lord closer so it is as if

My yearning for Him is with a finger gestured

ثقةً بمن تثقُ النفوس بأنها

ليست إذا فَزِعتْ إليه تفزع

Confidently in Him whom souls confident

That when panicked to Him they will not panic

المُنزِلي من وُدِّه في ذِرْوَةٍ

هي في ارتفاع النجم بل هي أرفع

Settling me in his affection at such

A height it is with the star’s elevation but loftier

والتاركي خَرِبَ القناعةِ بعدما

قد كان يُقنِعني الذي لا يُقنِع

Abandoning me the contentment after

What used to gratify me will not gratify

والمطمعي من غيرهِ بجزيل ما

يوليه فيما ليس فيه أَطْمع

And giving me hopes from other than Him of plenty what

He grants in what I do not hope

طَبْعُ السحائب في المواهب طَبْعُهُ

لا بل يداهُ من السحائبِ أَطبَع

Nature of clouds in bounties his nature

But no, his hands from clouds more stamped

متكبِّرٌ عن أن يُرى متكبِّراً

مترفِّعُ عن أن يرى يَتَرَفَّع

Arrogant from being seen arrogant

Lofty from being seen lofty

ومتوَّجٌ تاجَ الجمالِ فعنده

تَروَى العيونُ من الجمال وتَشبَع

And crowned the crown of beauty so in his presence

Eyes from beauty sate and saturate

لا يألفُ البُقيا على أموالِهِ

أو يألفَ المتنصِّبَ المتشيِّع

He does not befriend misers upon his riches

Or befriend the pretentiously pious

يهفو به تحتَ العجاجةِ سابحٌ

تهفو بأربَعِهِ الرياحُ الأرْبَع

Beneath arrogance those who trenchantly wade

The seas wade with their four winds

مستودعٌ يمناهُ قائمَ مُرْهَفٍ

حدُّ الردى في حدِّهِ مُسْتَوْدَع

A repository whose favor upright distressed

Zeal safeguards, in his zeal deposited

ما زعزعتْ كفَّاه مَتْنَ مُثَقَّفٍ

إلا توهمتُ الجبالَ تُزعْزَع

No shaken hand of a cultured prince

Except I fancied mountains shaken

فترى الشجاعَ إذا رآه كأنما

صَدْرُ الشجاعِ من الشجاعةِ بلقع

So you see the brave when he saw him as if

The chest of the brave from bravery armored

وإذا اشتكى ضيقَ المسالكِ في الوغى

شاكٍ فأضيقُها لديه الأوسع

And if he complained the straitened roadways amidst the fray

A complainer yet the widest to him more constricted

أسَمِيَّ خيرِ الأوصياءِ وَمَنْ غدا

في حوضِ خيرِ الأنبياء سَيَشْرَع

Name the best trustee and one who will tomorrow

Swim in the cistern of the best of prophets pledged

مذ زاد في الشعيِّ نورُ قصائدي

أيقنتُ أنَّ قصائدي تتشيّع

Since the glow of my odes increased in Al-Shuʿayb

I ascertained my odes are Shīʿite-inclined

خُذْها تروقُ مُوالياً وَمُعادياً

فيظلُّ ذا يسمو وذا يَتَضَعْضَع

Take them, they please loyalist and defier

So this continues lofty and that disintegrates

مَدَريَّةٌ وَبَريَّةٌ ضَبِّيّةٌ

عربيةٌ أنسابها تتفرَّع

Urbanite, nomad, refined, gentrified

Arabized genealogies bifurcate

لم يرعَ مرعاها أبو تمامٍ الط

ائيُّ قطُّ ولا رعاها أشْجَع

Neither Abu Tammam the Tayyi ever pastured it

Nor the brave ever pastured or more courageous

الوردُ من أطرافِها متضوِّعٌ

والشِّيحُ من أعاطافِها يَتَضَوَّع

The roses on its edges donned

And oleanders on its sides don

ويبينُ فيها معْ تَبَيُّنِ طُولِها

قِصَرٌ على السَّمعِ الذي يَتَسَمَّع

And along with the manifestness of its length

Brevity to the hearing that listens exposes

ويطيبُ مَقْطَعُها لديكَ وإِنما

طيبُ النوادرِ أن يطيبَ المقطَع

And its utterance sounds pleasing to you but
