يا لَحُدْب الظهور قُعسِ الرقاب

لدقاق الخرطوم والأذنابِ

O humpbacked with stooped necks,

With slender snouts and tails,

للطافٍ آذانها والخراطي

مُ حدادِ لأظفاء والأنياب

With delicate ears and paws,

Equipped with canines and claws,

خُلِقَت للفساد مذ خُلِقَ الخل

ق واللعيث والأذى والخراب

Created for corruption since vermin were made,

For villainy, harm and havoc were they.

ناقباتٍ في الأرض والسقف والحا

ئطِ نقباً أعيا على النقَّاب

Burrowers in earth, ceiling and wall,

Burrows beyond counting they install.

آكلاتٍ كل المآكل لات

أمها شاربات كل الشراب

Devourers of all edibles, nothing escapes,

Drinkers of every potion in shapely carafes.

آلفات قرضَ الثياب وقد يَع

دلُ قرضَ القلوب قرضُ الثياب

Gnawers of clothes, and at times

They match the gnawing of hearts by gnawing garbs.

زاد همِّي بهنَّ أوراقُ تركيُّ

السبالين أنمرُ الجلباب

My worries were compounded by the papers

Of the Turkish cats, the Protectors of gowns.

ليثُ غابٍ خَلقاً وخُلقاً فمن عا

ينه قال إِنه ليث غاب

A savage in nature and character, one who saw him

Said he's a jungle beast.

قنفذٌ في ازبئراره وهو ذئبٌ

في اغترار وحية في انسياب

A porcupine in conceit, a wolf at deceit,

A snake in his sly gait.

ناصبٌ طرفه إِزاءَ الزوايا

وإِزاءَ السقوفِ والأبواب

Spying all corners, ceilings and doors,

Lying in wait to get his chompers

ينتضي الظفرَ حين يظفر في الحر

بِ وإلا فظفره في قراب

On a quarry if he wins a war,

Else he’s happy with the crumbs in his paws.

سحبُ الصيدَ في أقلَّ من اللم

ح ولو كان صيده في السحاب

Dragging prey faster than a blink,

Even if the prey is high as you think.

قرطوه وقلدوه وعالو

ه أخيراً وأولاً بالخضاب

They crowned and collared him,

And either way dyed him red.

فهو طوراً يبدو بنحر عروسٍ

وهو طوراً يمشي على عُنَّاب

One day he skulks like the train of a bride,

Another he plods like a lizard outside.
