1. إِنّ عاراً عليَّ أخبثَ عارِ

    وشناراً أقْبِحْ به مِنْ شَنَارِ

    It is a disgrace upon me, the worst disgrace

    And a scarf, uglier with it than scarves

  2. اعتراضيك بالهجاء وتقذي

    ريَ شعري بقُذْرَةِ الأقدار

    Your insults to my poetry and defilement

    Of the irrigation of my poetry with vileness

  3. غيرَ أَنَّ الكريم والحرَّ قد يُبْ

    لى بغيرِ الكرامِ والأحرار

    Yet the noble and the free may be

    Afflicted without nobility or freemen

  4. يا خبيثَ النجار يا ابنَ أبي ح

    مّادٍ المقتدَي بخبثِ النجار

    O wicked carpenter, o son of Abu Hammad

    Emulating the wickedness of the carpenter

  5. أَخُفوفاً كذا إليَّ على جه

    لٍ خفوفَ الفراشِ نحوَ النار

    Attacking me suddenly in ignorance

    Like the bedbugs' rush towards fire

  6. وهجوماً على هجائي كما قد

    عاينَ الليثُ من هجومِ الحمار

    And assaulting my satire as the

    Donkey witnessed the lion's assault

  7. كاشفاً عن مُثَقِّفاتِ القوافي

    كَشْفَ بعضِ الشياهِ بعضَ الشِّفار

    Exposing the cultural pretensions

    As some foxes expose each other's burrows

  8. يا صغيراً لدى الأنامِ وإن كا

    ن لديهمْ من التيوسِ الكبار

    O small to the people even if

    To them you are among the big

  9. وحقيراً فما يؤولُ إلى وز

    نٍ ولا قيمةٍ ولا مقدار

    And despicable, amounting not to

    Any value or worth

  10. داخلاً في التِّجار وهو إذا فتّ

    شَهُ الناسُ من زُيوف التِّجار

    Partaking with the merchants, and if

    People examine the merchandise of merchants

  11. لحيةٌ مثل شعرة التيسِ لا تُشْ

    بِه في حُذْوِها لِحَى الأبرار

    A beard like the hair of a billy-goat, not resembling

    In its scrub the beards of the righteous

  12. ثم وجهاً قِسْنَا القرودَ إليه

    فوجدنا القرودَ كالأقمار

    Then a face, we compared monkeys to it

    And found the monkeys like moons

  13. في سوادٍ وصفرةٍ دعتِ النا

    سَ إلى أن دَعَوْهُ جُعْسَ المرار

    In blackness and yellowness, which called people

    To call him bitter garlic

  14. ذاك داءٌ وما لداءِ البراذي

    نِ دواءٌ إِلاّ لدى البَيْطَار

    That is a disease, and the disease of mange

    Has no cure but with the veterinarian
