One evening I went, enraptured, to the Euphrates’ shore,
with every swordlike youth—magnificent, a valiant champion.
The east wind had played upon it, till you would fancy it
a road of silver, with hills and furrows.
Round ripples upon it charm you, as though they were
signet rings of beauty on the cheeks of a graceful, soft-necked oryx.
