1. إن كان في الصيفِ ريحانٌ وفاكهةٌ

    فالأَرضُ مستوقَدٌ والجوُّ تَنّورُ

    If there is basil and fruit in summer

    The earth is inflamed and the air illuminated

  2. وإِن يكنْ في الخريفِ النخلُ مُخْتَرفاً

    فالأَرضُ عُرْيَانَةٌ والجوُّ مَقْرُور

    And if the palm trees are flowering in autumn

    The earth is bare and the air contracted

  3. وإِن يكنْ في الشتاءِ الغيثُ متَّصلاً

    فالأَرضُ محصورةٌ والجوُّ محصُور

    And if in winter the rain is continuous

    The earth is restricted and the air restricted

  4. ما الدهرُ إلا الربيعُ المستنيرُ إِذا

    أتى الربيعُ أتاكَ النَّورُ والنور

    Time is only the bright spring when

    Spring comes, light and illumination come to you

  5. الأَرضُ ياقوتةٌ والجوُّ لؤلؤةٌ

    والنبتُ فيروزجٌ والماءُ بَلُّور

    The earth an emerald and the air a pearl

    And the plants turquoise and the water crystalline

  6. ما يعدمُ النبتُ كأساً من سحائِبهِ

    فالنبتُ ضربان سكرانٌ وَمَخمور

    The plants never lack a cup from its clouds

    So the plants are twofold—intoxicated and fermented

  7. فيه لنا الوردَ منضودٌ مُؤزَّرُ ما

    بين المجالسِ والمنثورُ منثور

    For us there the rose, folded, girded

    Between the gatherings and scattered when scattered

  8. ونرجسٌ ساحرٌ الأبصارِ ليس كما

    كأنه من عَمَى الأَبصارِ مَسْحورُ

    And a sorcerous narcissus to the sights, not as

    If it from the blindness of sights is bewitched

  9. هذا البنفسجُ هذا الياسمينُ وذا ال

    نِّسرينُ ذا سوسنٌ في الحُسْنِ مشهور

    This is the violet, this the jasmine and this the

    Lily-of-the-valley, this a lily famous in beauty

  10. تظلُّ تَنثرُ فيه السُّحْبُ لؤلؤَها

    فالأَرضُ ضاحكةٌ والطيرُ مسرور

    The clouds therein keep shedding their pearls

    So the earth is laughing and the birds delighted

  11. حيث التفتَّ فقمريِّ وفاختةٌ

    فيه تُغَنِّي وشفنينٌ وَزَرْزُور

    Wherever the moon-like and alluring one turned

    There she sings, and chirping sparrow and humming hornet

  12. إذا الهزارانِ فيه صَوَّتا فهما السُّ

    رْنايُ والنايُ بل عودٌ وطنبور

    When the two singers there cry out, they are the

    Flute and reed-pipe, or even lute and drum

  13. تبارك اللهُ ما أحلى الربيعَ فلا

    تَغْرَرْ فقائسُهُ بالصيفِ مَغرور

    Blessed is God—how sweet is spring! But do not

    Be fooled, for its harvest fails in summer

  14. تطيبُ فيه الصحاري للمقيمِ بها

    كما تطيبُ له في غيرِهِ الدور

    The plateaus smell sweet in it for one staying there

    As homes smell sweet for him in others

  15. في كلِّ أرضٍ هبطنا فيه دَسْكَرَةٌ

    في كلِّ ظهرٍ عَلَوْنَا فيه ماخور

    In every land we descended intoxicated

    On every back we mounted alert

  16. مَنْ شَمَّ ريحَ تحيّاتِ الربيع يَقُلْ

    لا المسكُ مسكٌ ولا الكافورُ كافور

    Whoever smells the scent of spring’s greetings says

    “Not musk is musk, nor camphor camphor"
