قد وهبنا غزالنا المعشوقا

لك إِذ كنتَ بالغزالِ حقيقا

Our beloved has granted you the gazelle

Since you were truly gazelle-like

وعزمنا بأن تُفيقَ من الوج

دِ وما كان عزمُنا أن تُفيقا

And we intended you to awaken from languor

Though our intention was not that you awaken

ربما نؤثرُ الصديقَ بما نه

وى وقد يؤثرُ الصديقُ الصديقا

Perhaps we prefer a friend for what we fancy

And a friend may prefer a friend

هاكَ خذهُ إليك بدراً منيراً

وغزالاً أحوى وغصناً أنيقا

And a gazelle I adored and a graceful branch

You will always benefit from its beholding face

أبداً تستفيد من وجهه النا

ظر معنىً من الجمال دقيقا

A subtle meaning of beauty

I made its eyes narcissi and its cheeks

خلتُ عينيه نرجساً وثنايا

ه أقحواناً والوجنتين شقيقا

Apples and both cheeks akin

For you - a glance since it was fervent

لك طَرْفٌ مذ كان كان جموحاً

وفؤادٌ مذ كان كان مشوقا

And a heart since it was ardent

You will find regret that a sympathetic one

تجدُ الغَبْنَ أن يخال شفيقٌ

في تصابيكَ أنْ تطيعَ الشفيقا

In your windows obeys the sympathetic one

Every day it does not stop calling

كلَّ يومٍ ما إن تزال تنادي

مَن ببحرِ الهوى الغريقَ الغريقا

Who in the sea of love is drowning, is drowning

Dragging behind the tail of a debauched one

ساحباً في الفسوق ذيلَ خليعٍ

أفما آن أنْ تَمَلَّ الفسوقا

But has it not come time to cease debauchery

By my father you are master or dignitary

بأبي أنت سيداً أو عزيزاً

وخليلاً وصاحباً وشقيقا

And friend and companion and close

The law of love was not founded on partnership

سُنَّةُ العِشْقِ لم تؤسَّسْ على الشر

كةِ فارجعْ فقد غَلِطْتَ الطريقا

So turn back for you have missed the road
