1. أيّ كلابٍ بلا سواجيرِ

    وأيّ فُدْنٍ بغير ما نِيْرِ

    What hounds that are unmuzzled,

    What sheaths that have no swords,

  2. وأيّ عيرٍ لو كنت آلفُ أنْ

    أجوبَ عرضَ الفلاةِ بالعير

    What camels if I were to befriend,

    That I may roam the expanse of desolation with camels.

  3. قلْ لأبي طالبٍ وقل لأبي

    إِدريسَ قَوْلاً حليفَ تحبير

    Say to Abu Talib and say to

    Idris words of true alliance,

  4. كمَ الزوارقِ ما يكونُ كذا

    بغير قِيْرٍ ولا مَسامير

    How many boats can it be so,

    Without resin or nails.

  5. إِنْ كنتُم في حسابكم عرباً

    عندَ المقاييسِ والمقادير

    If you were Arabs in your reckoning,

    By standards and measures,

  6. فليسَ بين النبيطِ والعَرَبٍ ال

    خلَّصِ إلا قطعُ الزنانير

    Then between Nabit and Arabs there is only,

    The cutting off of the wristbands.

  7. لا درَّ درُّ الفلوسِ كم ضُرِبَتْ

    ظلماً على سكَّةِ الدنانير

    No lesson learned, the lesson of coins, how many

    Were unjustly minted on the path of dinars.

  8. تالله لن يُقْدِمِ الفَراشُ على ال

    مقباسِ إلا إقدامَ تغرير

    By Allah, the moth will never dare against

    The trivet, except daring delusion,

  9. ولو هفا الليثُ هفوةً فُدِيَتْ

    بألفِ كلبٍ وألفِ خنزير

    And if the lion roared weakly, it would be ransomed

    By a thousand dogs and a thousand pigs.

  10. فلا تغرَّنَّكَ الجسومَ إذا

    أَتتك مثلَ النخلِ المواقيرِ

    So do not be fooled by the bodies if

    They come to you like the towering date palms,

  11. عليك بابَ الحمَّامِ تلقَ به

    من كلِّ صنفٍ من التصاوير

    Take care of the bathroom door, receive through it

    Every kind of painting.

  12. جئتَ إلى صخرةٍ تناطحها

    ويكَ بعِرْضٍ من القوارير

    You came to a rock you butt heads with

    While I am with a barrage of cans,

  13. وكيف يرجو بلوغَ شَطِّيَ مَنْ

    غَرَّقْتُهُ في بحارِ تدميري

    And how can one who I have drowned

    In the seas of my destruction, hope to reach the shore of my realm,

  14. بينَ قفاهُ وبيم كفِّيَ ما

    بين المضاريبِ والطنابير

    Between his skull and the palm of my hand what is

    Between the buildings and drums.

  15. إِنْ أَهْجُ أمثالَكُمْ فربَّما

    تَطَرَّبَ البازُ للعصافير

    If I stir the likes of you, perhaps

    The ducks will chirp for the little birds.
