O you who accuse me of being a poet

You accused me of having noble morals

Do not rush and leave the blame foolishly

For poetry is the best adornment of lovers

Or did you not know that it has virtues

The comfort of the lonely and relief of the longing

And eloquence that enlightens minds and wisdom

That continues to spread in horizons

Had poetry been only for praising union

    Or satire of separation

Or describing a face like yours that remains

Always exceeding the sunrise in radiance

Or praising a companion who stays in a gathering

Neither bored nor fastidious of it

Or the return of a lute that laments its return

While the gentle breeze reveals the cupbearer's wrist

It suffices you that poetry has wonders

That remain forever necklaces around necks

With it is consoled every day of separation

And with it congratulated every day of reunion
