1. يا روضةً صاغ لها

    حُلِيَّها الأشراطُ

    O garden crafted for it

    Its ornaments the first rains

  2. خيطتْ عليها حُللٌ

    ما خاطها خيَّاط

    Woven onto it are robes

    Not sewn by a tailor

  3. فبعضُها مَطارفٌ

    وبَعْصُها أَنماط

    Some are head covers

    Others are patterns

  4. كأنما غُدرانُها

    من حولها رِياط

    As if its pearls

    Are winds around it

  5. الوحشُ في أرجائها

    قبائلٌ أَخلاط

    The wilderness in its corners

    Tribes of mixed folk

  6. وافت كما وافت غدا

    ةَ عيدها الأنباط

    They came to it as they did tomorrow

    To its Eid, the Anbat

  7. أو كرجالِ فارسٍ

    ضمَّهمُ ساباط

    Or like Persian men

    Brought together by Sabaṭ

  8. قَناطرٌ من سَبَجٍ

    أَحكمه الخرَّاط

    Aqueducts of tin

    Made firm by the potter

  9. ومتَّقٍ بمئبَرٍ

    كأنَّه خيَّاط

    And a pulpit of teak

    As if made by a tailor

  10. غادَيتُها ولم يُقِم

    أَعلامَهُ الغَطاط

    I left it and no banners remained

    Erected by al-Ghaṭṭāṭ

  11. بأكلبٍ لو لم تَطِر

    أَطارَها النَّشَاط

    With dogs, if they did not hunt

    Hunting would activate them

  12. في ساعةٍ لأدمُع ال

    حُزن بها انحِطاطُ

    In an hour I do not weep

    Sadness diminished in it

  13. تُمَدُّ طوراً سُجفَها

    وتارةً تُماط

    It extends barren at times

    At others it is folded

  14. فجئنَ والطلُّ على

    آذانها أَقراط

    We came while the shadow was

    On its ears like earrings

  15. قد نَحِفت أوساطُها

    فما لها أوساط

    Its middles had slimed

    It has no middles

  16. تضحك عن مثل المُدى

    فضحكها اختلاط

    It laughs at the likes of extent

    Its laughter mixed up

  17. حتى إذا انشقَّ لها

    من فجرها سراط

    Until the dawn ripped for it

    A piece of its veil

  18. وكادت الشمسُ بأط

    رافِ الدُّجى تُناط

    And the sun with the edges

    Of darkness clothed

  19. انبسطت كالشهب لا

    يُعجِزها انبساط

    It spread like a meteor

    Unhindered in its extent

  20. كأنما الأكفُّ في

    رؤوسها أمشاط

    As if palms were in

    Its tops like combs

  21. كأنما تَقتتل ال

    أرجلُ والآباط

    As if feet and marshlands

    Were fighting each other

  22. فطفقتْ والوحشُ في

    مجالها بساط

    So it began, and the wildlife in

    Its expanse a carpet

  23. هذا لذا عقالٌ

    وذا لذا رباط

    This for that a tether

    That for that a knot

  24. نِيطَتْ بها داهيةٌ

    مَسكنها النِّياط

    Tied to it, a black snake

    Whose home is bundles

  25. صرْعى تُشَقُّ قُمْصُها

    عَنْها ولا تُخاط

    A lifeless body whose shirt

    Is ripped from it, unsewn
