1. أدُورَ أحِبَّةٍ ليستْ بِدورِ

    رأيتُكِ دورَ غُيَّابٍ حضورِ

    I wander around lovers who are not circles

    I saw you as a circle of absence and presence

  2. رأيتُكِ آهلاتٍ موحشاتٍ

    مقاربةً مباعدةَ الأمور

    I saw you as populated and lonely dwelling

    Approaching and distancing things

  3. محطَّ رحالِ سَفْرٍ بعد سَفْرٍ

    يزيدُ ولا يبيدُ على الدُّهور

    A place for travelers to rest after travel

    Increasing and not perishing over the ages

  4. أقولُ وقد وقفتُ عليك دَمْعاً

    طليقاً مِن يَدَيْ قلبٍ أسير

    I say as I have stood before you with flowing tears

    Unfettered from the hands of an imprisoned heart

  5. جرى مسكُ الغمامِ على قبورٍ

    ممسَّكةِ البطونِ معَ الظهور

    The musk of clouds flowed over graves

    Clinging to their bellies along with their backs

  6. قبورٌ أودِعَتْ صُوَراً عَهِدْنا

    محاسِنَها ودائعَ في القصور

    Graves into which were deposited forms we knew

    Their beauties as trusts in palaces

  7. وسائلةٍ تسائلني ولما

    يُجِنَّ ضميرُها ما ضميري

    And a questioner who questions me and when

    Her conscience does not blame mine

  8. تسائلني أطالَ الليل أم لا

    وما الليل الطويلُ من القصير

    She asks me, has the night grown long or no?

    And what is a long night to one short?

  9. ألم ترني جزعتَ وليس خَلْق

    أشَدَّ على الجَزُوعِ من الصبور

    Did you not see me grieve and no nature

    Is harder on grieving than the patient

  10. يروحُ ببابِ قنّسرينَ دمعي

    وَيُبكِرُ في رواحي أو بُكُوري

    My tears come and go at the door of the mausoleum

    And rise early in my spirits, at dawn

  11. لحبِّ جنازةٍ ولحبِّ قبرٍ

    أحِنُّ إلى الجنائزِ والقبور

    For love of a funeral and love of a grave

    I yearn for dirges and tombs

  12. سَقَتْ ذا البابَ مُزْنٌ بعد مُزْنٍ

    تمرُّ مرورَ عيرٍ بعدَ عير

    This door was frequented by mourner after mourner

    Passing by like caravan after caravan

  13. نوائحُ بالرعودِ على الأماني

    بواكٍ بالغيوثِ على السرور

    Cries of thunder for wishes

    Wailers of rain for joys

  14. وجوهُ البرقِ فيها سافراتٌ

    من السُّحْبِ المُعلَّقَةِ الستور

    The faces of lightning in which are unveiled

    From hanging clouds the curtains

  15. فتكسو الأرضَ وشياً بعد وشيٍ

    وَتُلْبِسُها الحرير على الحرير

    And so they clothe the land, time after time

    And dress it in silk upon silk

  16. يحيِّيها بريحانٍ وراحٍ

    ويحبوها بنوّارٍ وَخيري

    With basil and breeze they give it life

    And gift it with rivulets and plenty

  17. بريحانٍ إذا ما رِيحَ ظَلَّتْ

    تعبَرُ عنه رائحةُ العبير

    Basil, when its aroma blows

    Its fragrance conveys ambergris
