1. لم أَتْرُكِ العُمْرَ غيرَ مَعْمورِ

    ولم أَحِرْ عن مودَّةِ الحور

    I did not leave life unfulfilled,

    Nor did I shy from the love of maidens.

  2. لكنّني أحذرُ الوشاةَ فلا

    وقاهمُ اللهُ كلَّ مَحْذُور

    But I do beware of slanderers, so

    May God protect me from all harm.

  3. فمن رآني فقد رأَى رجلاً

    حليفَ وصلٍ في زيِّ مهجور

    He who saw me saw a man,

    A friend of connection in neglected attire.

  4. وروضةٍ ما يزالُ يَبْتَسِمُ الن

    وَّارُ فيها بتسامَ مسرور

    And a garden where the fires still

    Smile with a pleased smile.

  5. شقَّ عليها الشقيقُ أرديةً

    ينثرُ فيها ألوانَ مثور

    The anemones opened their petals

    Scattering myriad hues.

  6. كأنما أَوْجُهُ البَهارِ بها

    وقد بدتْ أَوْجُهُ الدنانير

    As if the faces of spring through them

    Appeared like the faces of dinars.

  7. عاج بنا نحوها الخُمارُ وما

    إِن زالَ ذا دأبَ كلِّ مخمور

    The vines leaned towards them intoxicated,

    Never ceasing in the habit of the drunk.

  8. لدى رياضٍ تحفُّها شَجرٌ

    أَوْفَتْ ذُراها على المقاصير

    By gardens guarded with trees

    That poured their pears upon the fruits.

  9. يصطخبُ الطيرُ في جوانبها

    عند اصطخابِ الناياتِ والزير

    The birds chatter at their edges,

    When the flutes and lutes play.

  10. ثم اجتلينا عذراءَ تحسِرُ عن

    جسمِ عقيقٍ في ثوبِ بَلُّور

    Then we spied a maiden unveiling

    An onyx body in a crystal gown.

  11. مصونةً في الدنانِ زيَّنها

    لونُ خَلوقٍ وَنَشْرُ كافور

    Cloistered in her splendor, adorned

    By the hue of creation and camphor's bloom.

  12. تُجْلَى جلاءَ العروسِ في قَدحٍ

    من فضةٍ حُفَّ بالتَّصاوير

    She shines with the radiance of a bride in a

    Silver chalice decorated with figures.

  13. بكفِّ ساقٍ يظلُّ يسعى على الشَّ

    ربِ بوحهٍ قد صيغ من نُور

    With a leg whose shadow persists, hastening

    Over the drink in ecstasy molded from light.

  14. يكادُ ينقدُّ قدُّه قِصَفاً

    كَغُصْنِ بانٍ ريَّانَ ممطور

    It almost enumerates its steps like

    The boughs of a moist banana tree.

  15. يأسِرُ ألبابَهُمْ بمقلتِهِ

    فالقومُ من آسرٍ ومأسور

    Captivating their minds with her glance,

    So they are captive and imprisoned.

  16. ما طُلَّ دمعي على الطلولِ ولا

    دُرْتُ بصحبي يوماً على الطُّور

    I have not wept long for the tall,

    Nor have I, with my friends, roamed the hills.

  17. وسابريِّ الجمالِ أحسنَ ما

    رأيتُ من أَصلِ نَسْلِ سابور

    The most beautiful of beauties that

    I have seen, of the stock of Sapor.

  18. يَعْذِرني الناسُ في محبّته

    ولستُ في غيرِه بمعذور

    People pardon me for loving him,

    And I cannot be blamed for another.

  19. غنّى بشعرِ المعوَجِّ من طَرَبٍ

    غناءَ صبِّ الفؤادِ مضرور

    The crooked one’s song was enough to intoxicate

    The heart's pouring with torment.

  20. مَرُّوا فَدَعْ دارَهم على المُوْرِ

    وخلِّ للعِيْرِ ما على العيرِ

    They passed, so leave their abode in ruins,

    And let what’s on the camel be.
