We drank in the valleys
On those meadows
To the laughter of jesters
To the wailing of the chaste
To the beating of drums
And the singing of lyricists
In the lights of a rose-colored flower
Dressed in the gentlest colors
Like peacocks' tails
Like necklaces of pearls
Like the necks of vessels
And the cheeks of jugs
We drank, so come and see
The drinking of the devoted
The drinking of jinn
The drinking of demons
At dawn with chasms
At dusk with fires
When drunkenness walked
Among us with the gait of moths
And we got bored so we swayed
Swaying like snakes
We got up and were thrilled
With thrills and melodies
With clapping and rhythm
Like the rhythm of tambourines
And dancing that snatches the moment
With stirring and calming
As if we were treading the necks
With the tips of daggers
As if we were, as we hovered,
Men on giraffes
When we finished our right
Of that moment
We scrambled to the ponds
From atop the shops
We swam and thrashed around
Like the thrashing of the insane
And we went in two states
Of clay and creation
So say in an incident that bringsdecay
Upon the incident of Siffin
O you who are my orchard
And the orchard of orchards
O you who are my basil
And the basil of basils
O musk of India
O perfume of the two abodes
O joy of April
O gentleness of October
O nightingale, O peacock, O duck of China
O dawn and feast day
O feast of Šaʿbān
You greet me, so you give me life
You sing to me, so you make me sing
And I show off, so you provide for me
And I call you, so you answer me
O sorcerer, how you have enchanted me
My eyes and made me ascend
O killer, how you have killed me
With love and given me life
You name me tempted
And your glances seduce me
How good are my names
Except what you name me
You were creative in morals
In all creations
As for in rhetoric
The book of books
As for in worship
The criterion of scales
As for in cunning
The demon of demons
In the monastery and pillars
From it and the bishops
In the temple and the slaughter
No, but with offerings
With crucifixes and incense
And the lighting of censers
And Easter and what is performed in it
Of dust and mud
And those who attend from rabble
And from Ghud and from ʿAyn
Some are in litters
And some are in howdahs
Having put on the chains
On the sand dunes of Yabrin
And by the Book read
With a thrilling recitation
And kinds of laws
And kinds of regulations
And in Petra and Esaf
Among them and the purple-robed
And those in Mount Thabur
And those in Mount Sinai
Owners of shacks
Owners of monasteries
Wearing dark cassocks
On the blackness of monk's garb
Are you keeping the pact of love with me
The keeping of Sanin?
So has love for me increased
Or has one who betrayed like a hawk betrayed me?
I do not love anything forbidden -
God forbid - in religion
And accursed is only one who
Sees the opinion of heretics
