Sorrow has closed the door of joy in you, my dear Abi Mansur

You are more precious to me than life itself

I have always been cautious about you, but alas

No mortal can evade what is foreordained

O companion of pens, what has made you

Turn away from them to become a companion of the grave

Hardship has shaped your face until

I see in it the faces of the dead

So my tears fall for your flawless form

And I grieve for your broken rights

It's not the excellent horse you ride but rather

The saddle of a fierce lion you sit in

And who now will appreciate eloquence, poetry

And the knowledge of prose and verse?

Thank God, my friend, for many

A man of nobility and ambition is now in the dust

You were a full moon on a spear

Now you are a dog, led on a leash
