دعا بي سيِّدُ الناسِ
إلى بّرٍ وإيناسِ
The master of mankind called me
To righteousness and kindness
عبيدُ الله ذو المجدِ
وذو الجودِ وذو الباس
Abdullah, the glorious one
The generous, the powerful one
ولبَّاس الحلى العا
جزَ عنها كلُّ لبَّاس
Wearing the finest garments
Surpassing all other garment-wearers
فلو أستطيعُ بادرتُ
على العينينِ والرَّاس
If only I could, I would hasten
To the eyes and the head
وغادرتُ الأباريقَ
يُصَلِّين إلى الكاس
And abandon the jugs
That lead me to the goblet
ولم أضعفْ عن الشرب
بجامٍ لا ولا طاس
And not weaken in drinking
From a cup or bowl
وسابقتُ إلى السكرِ
وما بالسكرِ منْ باس
And race to sweetness
Though sweetness is harmless
ولم أُخْلِ من اللهوِ
مكاني بينَ جُلاَّسي
And not neglect amusement
Among my seated companions
مكلّلاً بإكليلٍ
منَ الوردِ أوِ الآس
Crowned with wreaths
Of roses or myrtle
لدى قصرٍ غَدَتْ آسا
سُهُ أكرمَ آساس
Near a palace whose foundation
Is the noblest foundation
فكم ذكَّر ذاك القص
رُ بالجنَّةِ منْ ناس
How that palace reminds
Many people of Paradise
وكم قيدَّ أطماعَ
ذوي الأضغانِ بالباس
And restrains the greed
Of the malevolent with force
ببهوٍ مُلْبَسٍ ثوبَ
بهاءٍ أيَّ إِلباس
With halls clothed in the garment
Of splendor, what fine attire!
وبستانٍ كأنّا مِنْ
ه في حانوتِ نخَّاس
And gardens as though made
By a merchant of heavens
لسهم اللحظةِ الواح
دِ فيه ألفُ برجاس
For the arrow of a single glance
In it a thousand targets
أبا القَاسمِ يا ذا الطو
دُ طودَ الكرم الراسي
O Abu al-Qasim, O mighty pillar
Supporting munificence
ويا أكرمَ حالٍ منْ
ثناءِ الخلقِ أو كاسي
O most generous state
Beyond people's praise or cup
فهذا ضوءُ عذري ما
عَداهُ ضوءُ مقباس
This is the light of my excuse
Beyond it, the light of a lamp
