The son of al-Sanubari cast off reproach
And went about seeing no shame in that
He abandoned dreams and rode atop God
And strode wherever he strode
He ignored sanity and excelled in love
Despite those who blamed and maligned him
Worthy of the elite life is he
For whom tenderness kept sheltered is home
Her gazelles seduced us with glances
That robbed our hearing and sight
Never before had we seen the like of those gazelles
That brought forth from their pockets moons
O Abu al-Tayyib, too sublime to
Describe a dream, calm and dignity
Had you seen the sly gazelle when she
Cast off her veil and shed her cover
Still not sated am I by her
Compliance and her perfume
Blame me not, for who blames the lovelorn
Who has loved none but the young
I love none but a lad of ten, so if
Beyond ten he grew, he'd exceed the limit
I've protected the charm and grace I own
Since learning to spend verse
No miserliness in what I bear inside
But some saw my love an honor
