1. الصدُّ والهجرُ والإعراضُ والصَّلَفُ

    والبخل والشحُّ والإفراطُ والسَّرفُ

    Rejection, estrangement, aloofness, pride

    Stinginess, miserliness, excess, extravagance

  2. نأيٌ وبينٌ وبُعدٌ قد لهجتَ به

    فليس تَثني ولا تُلوي ولا تَعف

    You have spoken of estrangement, distance, separation

    You do not relent, bend, or pardon

  3. لم يبقَ ضربٌ من الهجران تعلمُهُ

    إلا وعندك منه سيِّدي طَرَف

    There remains no kind of estrangement you don't know

    In all of them, my lord, you stand supreme

  4. وقائلٍ صفْ أبا بكرٍ خلائِقَه

    في الحبِّ قلت له قد جُزنَ ما أَصف

    Someone described Abu Bakr's traits in love

    I said: You have gleaned what I would describe

  5. لو أن للشمس جزءاً من خلائِقِهِ

    من ألف جزءٍ تمنَّى الناسُ تنكسف

    If the sun had but a fraction of his qualities

    People would wish for its eclipse, of a thousand parts, one

  6. اللهَ اللهَ في قتلي فما ليَ مِن

    جُرمٍ إليكم سوى أني بكمْ كَلِفُ

    Oh God! Oh God! In killing me, what crime

    Have I committed against you, besides my passion for you?

  7. أضعتُ حُسنكَ إن لم أجنِ صَفوَتهُ

    والعيشُ مقتبلٌ واللهو مؤتنَف

    I have wasted your beauty, if I do not gain intimacy

    While life is pleasant, and joy is renewed

  8. فالوردُ ممَّا ترى من حُسن صورته

    من قبل يَذبُل في الأغصان يُقتَطف

    The roses you see, with beautiful features

    Wilt on the branches, before they can be plucked

  9. يا سيدي لستُ أرضى من هواكَ بأن

    تُطوى وتُنشرَ فيما بيننا الصُّحُف

    My lord, I am not pleased with your love

    By letters exchanged between you and I

  10. إِن أنت أنصفتني فيما أُحاولُهُ

    من الوصالِ وإلا سوف أَنْتَصِف

    If you judge me fairly in what I seek

    Of union, or I will take revenge
