قد أتَتْنا تلكَ القوافي الحياري

باكياتٍ على المعاني الأسارى

Those rhymes have come to us, confused,

Crying over captive meanings,

لا نصارى ترضى بهنَّ هجاءً

لمهاجٍ ولا كلابُ النصارى

No Christians would be pleased with their satire,

Nor would the dogs of the Christians accept the blame,

وإذا ما العَوَانُ ضاقَ بشيءٍ

ذرعُها كنتَ عاذراً للعذارى

And if the transgression becomes too narrow for them,

You'd be excusing the chaste,

ما بُرَيْهِمُ من حميري على الصَّحْ

وِ ولكنَّهُ حمارُ السكارى

It's not my donkey they rode in the valley,

But the donkey of drunkards,

أيّ أَيرٍ يهوى القيامَ على من

فوهُ للصَّقْرِ واستُه للحُبارى

What shame in desiring to rise against one,

Whose mouth is for falcons and wrap is for monks.
