1. يا لها من معارفِ

    يا لها من مآلفِ

    O how fine her companions are!

    O how fine her associations are!

  2. لو قضينا حقوقها

    بالدموع الذوارف

    Had we fulfilled her rights

    With abundant flowing tears,

  3. لمحتْ آيَها المدا

    معُ مَحْوَ الصَّحائف

    Her signs would have shone, with the erasure of pages.

    Standing still in some of those places does not satisfy me,

  4. لا تَسُمني الوقوف في

    بعض تلك المواقف

    And neither does the pure drink of wine,

    From the light-footed one's hand,

  5. واجن صفوَ المدام من

    ريقِ صافي السوالف

    While heavy in the howdah.

    In ornamented gardens,

  6. من خفيف الخُطى على

    ثِقَلٍ في الروادف

    Adorned with the greens of meadows,

    The ground was dotted with violet,

  7. في جنانٍ مزخرفا

    تٍ بِحَليِ الزَّخارف

    Like the dots of scripture.

    And we have a narcissus that transcends

  8. ورياضٍ موشّحا

    تٍ بِخُضر المطارف

    The ability of any describer,

    With the eyes of onlookers,

  9. نُقِّطتْ بالبنفسج ال

    أرضُ نَقْطَ المصاحف

    And the eyes of maidens.

    If you could see it swaying

  10. ولنا نرجسٌ تَعا

    ظمَ عن حدِّ واصف

    Like the swaying of gentle gazelles,

    Confused among yellow and white -

  11. كعيونٍ نواظرٍ

    وعيونٍ طوارف

    Standing still.

    Like the black of gazelle's eyes

  12. لو تراهُ يميد مَيْ

    دَ الغواني الظرائف

    In the palms of young ladies,

    Among crowned cypress trees

  13. حِرتَ في أصفرٍ على

    أبيضٍ منه واقف

    And cooing doves.

    Like maidens when they don jewellery

  14. مثل أحداق عسجدٍ

    في أكف الوصائف

    Of short chemises,

    And streams whose murmuring

  15. بينَ سروٍ مكلَّلٍ

    بالحمام الهواتف

    Is like the stirring of lutes,

    The gentlest of winds designed their carving.

  16. كالجواري إذا لتحف

    ن قصارَ الملاحف

    How many a tear I have shed, while the torrent

    Of calamities was let loose!

  17. وسواقٍ خريرها

    كاصطخاب المعازف

    Her ostriches walk

    Like the walking of bishops.

  18. أَبدعت نَقشَها أك

    ففُّ الرياح الضعائف

    Swaying from their sides

    Are the fringes of their mantles.

  19. رب خرقٍ خرَقتُ والل

    سيلُ مُلقى الرفارف

    With an imam leading, in front of the row

    Of raging winds.

  20. تتمشَّى نعامُهُ

    كتمشِّي الأساقف

    Playing with their hands in travel

    Is the play of checkered cloth,

  21. مُلْقياتٍ من الجوا

    نبِ خَمْلَ القطائف

    Like a lance-thrower - no, like an archer - no, like a sword-fighter

    Graceful when folding

  22. بإمامٍ أمامَ ص

    فِّ الرياح العواصف

    Those battle ranks after battle ranks.

    He continued folding the abodes of communion after separation,

  23. بِلَعوبِ اليدينِ في ال

    سَّير لُعب المُثاقِف

    Knowing the place of the Gnostics through Abul Hussein.

    He is a young man whose disposition befits

  24. كالمرامي بل كالمَطا

    عنِ بل كالمُسايف

    The disposition of successors.

    The king of generosity - his property

  25. لَبِقٌ عند طيِّهِ

    بُسْطَ تلك الصَّفاصف

    Is without scarcity or paucity.

    So you see him giving generously

  26. ظلَّ يَطْوي بيَ التنا

    ئفَ بعد التنائف

    The generosity of gamblers.

    With glory against the shameful,

  27. عارفاً من أبي الحسي

    نِ مكانَ العوارف

    And gentleness towards the gentle,

    He is fear for the safe

  28. من فتىً عودُهُ مُنا

    سبُ عُودِ الخلائف

    And safety for the fearful.

    A star never setting,

  29. ملك الجود ماله

    من تليد وطارف

    A moon never waning.

  30. فتراه يجود بال

    مالِ جُوْدَ المجازِف

  31. ذو إِباءٍ على الأب

    يِّ وطوعُ الملاطِف

  32. فهو خوفٌ لآمن

    وهو أَمنٌ لخائف

  33. كوكبٌ عير آفلٍ

    قمرٌ غير كاسف
