1. يضيقُ بشكرِ ما توليه باعي

    ويقصر عن تناولِهِ ذراعي

    My gratitude falls short of what you grant

    And my arms fail to reach it

  2. خَلَفْتَ جدودَك الخلفاءَ جوداً

    فأنت لما رَعَوْا من ذاكَ راعي

    You surpassed your ancestors the Caliphs in generosity

    So you are to what they herded the shepherd

  3. إلا يا أيها الغيثُ المرجَّى

    نداهُ للسِّباخِ وللبقاع

    O you the hoped rain

    Its call to the plains and lands

  4. هَوِيتَ المستطاعَ من المعالي

    وما كهواك غير المستطاع

    You attained what can be attained of glories

    And nothing but the attainable is your desire

  5. لُهَىً يُلْهيننا عن أهلِ عصرٍ

    تُناط لهاهُمُ بلهى السِّباع

    A pastime that distracts us from the people of an era

    Whose madness is distracted by beasts' madness

  6. وليس البائسُ المخدوعُ إلا ال

    ذي يرجو النباهةَ بالخداع

    The wretch deceived is none but he

    Who hopes for glory through deception

  7. أبا العباس يا بدرَ المعالي

    لرانيه ويا شمسَ المساعي

    O Abu Al-Abbas, O full moon of glories

    For its beholder, O sun of endeavors

  8. أتى عَلَفُ الحمامِ على المطايا

    فضاقتْ عن مطاياه رِباعي

    The pigeons' fodder came on thoroughbreds

    So my stables fell short of thoroughbreds

  9. وظنَّ الناسُ أنَّ لنا ضياعاً

    فذلك بعضُ غلاَّتِ الضياع

    And people thought we have estates

    That is some of the expensiveness of estates

  10. أبا العباس يا أحلى ثناءٍ

    على الأسماعِ من حُلْوِ السماع

    O Abu Al-Abbas, O sweetest praise

    To the ears, sweeter than hearing

  11. لئن أشْبَعْتَ من جوعٍ حمامي

    فكم أشبعتَ من ناسٍ جياع

    If you have satiated my pigeons' hunger

    How much have you satiated starving people
