1. ولقد ظمئتُ إلى الفرا

    تِ بكلَّ ذي كرمٍ ومجدِ

    I yearned for the shore with all the generous and glorious

    The sun at its setting

  2. والشمس عند غروبها

    صفراءُ مذهبةُ الفرند

    Is yellow, gilding the bay

    The water, its banks are green

  3. والماءُ حاشيتاه خض

    راونِ من آسٍ وَرَنْد

    With myrtle and oleander

    The wind's hands caress it

  4. تحبوه أيدي الريح إن

    ولَّتْ على قربٍ وبعد

    When it turns upon near and far

    With silver embellishments

  5. بطرائفٍ من فضةٍ

    وطرائقٍ من لازورد

    And methods of lapis lazuli

    The ships like birds took off

  6. والسُّفْنُ كالطير انبرت

    في الجوّ من مثنى وفرد

    In the air two by two and alone

    Until when the ebb of the shore passed

  7. حتى إذا جَزْرُ الفرا

    تِ مضى وأعقبه بمد

    And the flood followed after

    I found it as if

  8. ألفيته وكأنه

    ملقى عليه رداءُ ورد

    Cast over it was a rose gown

    Tossing like one inebriated

  9. متململاً كالصبّ أُو

    ذِنَ من أحبته يصد

    From the wine of those he loves

    As if his mind was filled

  10. وكأنما بحشاه ما

    بحشاي من قلق ووجد

    With anxiety and passion
