1. ألا يا ابنَ الجُنَيدِ اسمعْ

    وما أنت بذي سَمْعِ

    Listen, O Ibn al-Junayd, and hear,

    Though you have no hearing,

  2. ولا أنت بذي ضُرٍّ

    ولا أنت بذي نَفْع

    And you have no benefit,

    And you have no harm.

  3. على التَّفْريق إِملاكُ

    كَ هذا لا على الجمْع

    To separation is your rule,

    Not to union like this.

  4. على التطليقِ من يومِ

    كَ مقهوراً على الخَلْع

    To divorce since the day

    You were subdued to rejection.

  5. على التَّعس على النكس

    على النحس على الفَجْع

    To misery, to defeat,

    To ill luck, to bereavement,

  6. على الهمِّ على الغمِّ

    على الرُّغم على الجَدْع

    To anxiety, to sorrow,

    To vexation, to severance.

  7. على تَحَرُّق القلب

    على تَحدُّر الدَّمع

    To the heart's burning,

    To the tears' flowing.

  8. على لُبس ضنىً ليس

    له ما عشتَ من نزع

    To wearing misery that has

    No relief as long as you live.

  9. ضنىً يفعلُ في جسم

    كَ فِعْلَ النارِ في الشَّمْع

    Misery that does to the body

    Like fire does to wax.

  10. أفي الضَّيْعةِ أُطْمِعتَ

    وفي الكَرْمِ وفي الزَّرْع

    Were you promised the farm

    And the vineyard and the crops?

  11. وفي النِّصْفِ منَ الدارِ

    أمِ الثُّلْثِ أمِ الرُّبْع

    And half of the house?

    Or a third? Or a quarter?

  12. وفي جهَازِها الفاخِ

    رِ منْ لِبْدٍ ومنْ نِطْع

    And her lavish dowry

    Of clothes and slippers?

  13. فم ثَمَّ وكم ثَمَّ

    منَ الوَضْعِ على الوضع

    So why, and how much,

    Placing over placing?

  14. وكم من طَسْت فَخَّارٍ

    وإِبريقٍ من القَرْع

    And how many jugs,

    And pots made of clay?

  15. وكم من صبغ أرضٍ فو

    قه حَلْيٌ من الوَدْع

    And how much dyed land whose

    Dye is henna from perfuming?

  16. وحاشاكَ وحاشاك

    من المرجان والجَزْع

    Far be you, far be you

    From coral and ambergris.

  17. فلا تُصرَعْ فما قَدَّر

    تَهُ شرٌّ من الصَّرْع

    So do not be struck down, for no

    Evil is predestined but affliction.

  18. وأَقلِع عن حديثٍ يُؤ

    ذنُ الأضراسَ بالقَلع

    And desist from talk that makes

    The molars ache from extraction.

  19. فخبزُ المرأةِ البائ

    تُ خبزٌ عَسِرُ البلع

    For a estranged wife's bread

    Is bread hard to swallow.

  20. أَترجُو الصنعَ ممن ي

    دُها قفلٌ على الصّنع

    Do you hope for favor from one

    Whose hand is locked from favoring?

  21. وهذا إِن نجا عرض

    كَ مِنْ قَذْفٍ ومن قذْع

    And if this escapes your honor

    From slander and from stabbing,

  22. ولم تجرع مرارَ الغي

    ظِ جَرْعاً أيَّما جَرْع

    You have not tasted the bitterness of

    Wrongdoing, no matter the tasting.

  23. تَخَرَّفْتَ رقاعاتٍ

    فما تصلحُ للرَّقْع

    You have torn into tatters

    That cannot be mended.

  24. فأنتَ الدَّنِسُ الجيبِ

    وأنتَ الضِّيقُ الذَّرْع

    You are the soiled pocket

    And the narrow width.

  25. وأنتَ الوَسِخُ المنظ

    رِ والمَخْبَرِ والطَّبْع

    You are the filthy onlooker

    And the talebearer and the swindler.

  26. على رِسلِكَ يا نذلُ

    ويا أذلَّ من فَقْع

    Curse be upon you, O despicable one,

    O more disgraced than a field rat.

  27. غداً يُستَخرَجُ المهرُ

    بأنواع منَ الصَّفْع

    Tomorrow the dowry will be taken

    With all sorts of slapping,

  28. تؤدِّيه على الصُّغْر

    بلا دَفْعٍ ولا مَنْع

    You will pay while still young

    With no refusal and no prevention.

  29. وأصهارُك كلٌّ قا

    بضٌ منكَ على الضَّبع

    And your in-laws are all

    Grabbing you like a hyena.

  30. فلا تَنْفكُّ من لطمٍ

    ومن لكمٍ ومن نَخْع

    So you will not be spared a slap

    Or a punch or a bite.

  31. ويأتي الخَتَنُ الأوَّ

    لُ مثلَ الأسدِ المقعي

    And the first circumciser will come

    Like a sharpened lion.

  32. فلا تدفعُ عن حقٍّ

    وهل للحقِّ من دَفْع

    So you will not defend a right,

    And does a right have defending?

  33. ومَن باضَعَ من قبلُ

    هو الأمْلَكُ بالبُضْع

    And whoever penetrated before

    Is the most entitled to penetrate.

  34. فإن رُغتَ لعدِّ الي

    دِ من إِحدى إلى سَبْع

    So if you desire the counting of hands

    From one to seven,

  35. فخلِّ البطن للشقِّ

    وخلِّ الرأسَ للقطع

    Then expose your stomach to flogging

    And your head to cutting.

  36. لسايفتَ من الجند

    يّ سيفاً صادقَ الوقع

    It’s as if I see you, if I envision,

    In forgiveness and coat of mail,

  37. كأني بك إِن أقب

    لَ في المغفرِ والدرع

    With a flashing blade in your right

    Outshining lightning in its flashing,

  38. وفي يمناهُ لمَّاعٌ

    يفوق البرقَ في اللمع

    You have thundered like red clouds,

    Fever of ghosts and hilltops,

  39. وقد أُرْعِدْتَ كالمحمو

    مِ حُمّى الغِبِّ والرِّبع

    And you have inclined angrily

    Like the succession of even and odd,

  40. وواليتَ بِحُنْقٍ م

    توالي الوَتْر فالشَّفْع

    While the hooves fly from beneath

    Or hide from the hooves.

  41. يطيرُ النَّقْعُ من تحت

    كَ أو تَخْفَى من النقع

    For if you come to polytheism

    You have come with heresy,

  42. فإن جئتَ إلى الشِّرْكَ

    ةِ تدعو جئتَ بالبِدْع

    He will appoint you over the dunghill

    And take over the teat.

  43. يُوَلِّيك على القَرْنِ

    ويستولي على الضَّرْع

    If you submit, you will not be worth

    A single groat, not even a trifle!

  44. فإن سَلَّمْتَ لم توزن

    بزرٍّ لا ولا شِسْع

    And we will make you wear the hat of disgrace,

    Elevated hat of disgrace.

  45. وألبسناكَ قُبْعَ الأيَّ

    ل المرتفعِ القُبْع

    And if he is allied with lowering and raising,

    The Lord of the Hill is, before you, not removed from the hill!

  46. خراطهوإن كان

    حَليف الخفضِ والرَّفْع

    May Allah pelt you, O complacent one, O firmly attached at the teat,

    With long-nosed milkweed, or longer than milkweed,

  47. فربُّ الربعِ مِنْ قبل

    كَ لم يرْحلْ عن الربع

    It has a head, if you pull it out,

    In the form of sprouting,

  48. رماك اللهُ يا راضِ

    عٌ يا مستحكم الرَّضْع

    It pricks you inside your mouth

    With quite a prick.

  49. برقشاءَ بطولِ النِّسْ

    ع أو أطولَ مِنْ نِسْع

    For you are not of clay in heat

    Nor of wet wood.

  50. لها رأسٌ إذا تُطْلِ

    عُهُ في هيئةِ الطَّلْع

    Nay! You are glass not fused

    At the crack.

  51. تُغادي فاكَ من فيها

    بلذعٍ أيِّما لذع

    So do not take pride in a people

    Whom you did not match in rhyming.

  52. فما طينُكُ بالحرِّ

    ولا عودُكَ بالنَّبع

    If you were right in origin

    You were not right in branch.

  53. بلى أنت زجاجٌ لس

    تَ بالملتئم الصَّدْع

  54. فلا تفخرْ بأهلٍ لم

    توافِقهُمْ على السَّجع

  55. لئن طبتَ منَ الأصلِ

    لما طبتَ من الفرع
