وكان الهوى مَزْحاً فصار الهوى جدا

The passion I felt has grown beyond bounds

What was once fanciful love is now serious and profound

وقد كنتُ جَلْداً ثم أوهنني الهوى

وهذا الهوى ما زال يستوهنُ الجلْدا

Once sturdy, love has left me frail

As passion still makes the sturdy fail

فلا تعجبي من غُلبِ ضَعفِكِ قوتي

فكم من ظِباء في الهوى غلَبَتْ أُسْدا

So do not wonder that your weakness overcame my might

For in love many a doe has conquered lions in fight

غلبتمْ على قلبي فصرتمْ أحقَّ بي

وأملك لي مني فصرتُ لكم عبدا

You've won my heart and now have more right to me

I'm now your slave, no longer my own, you see

جرى حُبُّكُمْ مَجْرى حياتي فقدكُمُ

كفقدِ حياتي لا رأيتُ لكم فقدا
