1. جنّبيه الفراقَ قبلَ الفراقِ

    فالتلاقي في الهجر غيرُ تلاقِ

    Spare him the pangs of separation before separation

    For reunion in estrangement is not truly reunion

  2. أمنَ العدل ماءُ نفسٍ مُراقٌ

    كلَّ يومٍ في ماءِ عينٍ مراق

    Is the justice of a diseased soul equitable water?

    Everyday it is in the water of weeping eyes.

  3. يا بكاءً أفنى مآقيَّ حتى

    إِن عيني تبكي بغير مآقي

    Oh weeping that exhausted my calamities until

    My eyes weep without calamities

  4. وحشاً حَشْوُها عقابيلُ وَجدٍ

    يرتقي حرُّ ناره في التَّراقي

    The desert, whose fiery heat climbs

    In the flickering of its flames

  5. طلعتْ والصباحُ يطلُعُ منها

    فترينا الإِشراقَ في الإشراق

    She rose while the dawn was rising from her

    So she showed us the brilliance in the brilliance

  6. وَمَضتْ والغصونُ تحسدُ ما بي

    ن وشاحاتها إلى الأطواق

    And left while the branches envied what was between

    Her cheeks and her dress on her hips

  7. جنَّةٌ أيُّ جنةٍ تعشقُ الخل

    دَ لديها نواظرُ العشَّاق

    What garden, what garden is in love with barrenness?

    For it, the gazes of lovers.

  8. ما لها كيف حَمَّلت ثِقلَ إِثمي

    عُنُقاً لا يطيقُ ثِقلَ العناق

    Why did she take on the burden of my sins?

    A neck that cannot bear the burden of embrace

  9. ألأنّ الشبابَ لم يبقَ عندي

    ما شبابٌ ولا مشيبٌ بباق

    Is it because youth no longer remains with me?

    There is no youth or old age left

  10. أم لأن الإِملاقَ أزمع حربي

    إِنَّ لي ناصراً على الإملاق

    Or is it because resolving my war

    I have a victorious ally against resolving

  11. والسحابُ الذي متى يَسقِ لا ير

    ضى بسَقي الدِّماثِ دون البُراق

    And the cloud that does not satisfy when it rains

    Is not content watering blood without lightning.

  12. ذو المحلِّ الذي نأى المحلُ عنه

    والطريقِ المعمورِ بالطرّاق

    Oh master of glory, glory has distanced itself from you

    And the busy path with visitors

  13. يا أبا القاسم الذي أحرز السب

    قَ إلى المكرمات عند السباق

    Oh Abu Al-Qasim, who won the lead

    To favors, ahead of the racers

  14. يا سناءَ الملوك مَن كان بالشا

    م ومن كان منهمُ بالعراق

    Oh pride of kings, one who was in Syria

    And one who was among them in Iraq

  15. ومقيمَ الآراءِ فيما يعاني

    ه مَقامَ المهنَّدات الرقاق

    Settling views amidst what he suffers

    Takes the position of fine carpets

  16. ومثيراً من غامضِ العلمِ والحل

    مِ كنوزاً تَنْمي على الإنفاق

    And rousing the obscure parts of knowledge and dreams

    Like treasures that grow with spending

  17. ماءُ لفظ تَنَزَّهَ السمعُ منه

    في نواحي ضَحْضَاحِهِ الرقراق

    The wording whose hearing is purified

    In the far reaches of its dripping spring

  18. وعقودٌ من البلاغةِ لو تُدْ

    ركُ لمساً عُقِدْنَ في الأعناق

    Compacts of eloquence, if understood

    Would be wrung around necks

  19. عاهدَ المجدُ منك إذ عاهدَ المج

    دُ وفياً بالعهدِ والميثاق

    You swore faithfulness to glory when glory swore

    Faithfulness and loyalty to the covenant

  20. خُلُقٌ من زيادةِ الله والأغ

    لبِ ما زال حِلْيةَ الأخلاق

    A nature from the increase of God and hearts

    That remained the adornment of morals

  21. فاتحٌ مُغْلَقَ الخطوبِ إِذا ع

    يّ سواهُ بالفتحِ والإِغلاق

    An opener of difficult times, when none

    Could open them, with opening and locking

  22. في رداءٍ من النباهة يحكي

    مجتليه بالرفق والإرفاق

    In a gown of brilliance that recalls its wearer

    With kindness and compassion

  23. متوافي الآراءِ لم تتفاوتْ

    قطُّ آراؤه بقدرِ فُواق

    Settled in opinion, his views never differed

    At all, like branches and trunks.

  24. مستقلٌّ شأو العتاقِ فأدنى

    شأوِهِ في السماح شأوُ العتاق

    Independent in the most noble of freedoms

    His least nobility in generosity rivals the noblest freedoms

  25. بين لينٍ وشدةٍ فتراه

    وهو حُلُو المذاقِ مُرَّ المذق

    Between softness and firmness, so he is

    Sweet yet bitter to the taste

  26. وكذاك الدرياقُ ما زال لل

    سمِّ شفاءٌ والسمُّ في الدرياق

    Thus poison is, it remains an antidote to poison

    While poison remains in the antidote

  27. والغيوثُ الرواءُ أكثرُ ما تر

    ويك وبين الإرعادِ والإبراق

    Rainclouds are most generous when they

    Lightning and thunder between drought and downpour

  28. ثابتُ الفرعِ ثابتُ الأصل في المج

    د شبيهُ الغصون بالأعراق

    Firm of branch, firm of root, in glory, like

    Branches to trunks.

  29. نحن طوراً في روضة أُنُفٍ من

    ه وطوراً في وابلٍ غيْداق

    We are sometimes in a meadow blossomed from it

    And sometimes in a heavy downpour from it

  30. فَهُوَ الدهرَ للعلى بدرُ تِمٍّ

    ليس يجري عليه حُكْمُ المحاق

    It is time for the sublime as a full moon

    That will not succumb to annihilation

  31. لوعةٌ مثلُ لوعةِ العُشاقِ

    واشتياقٌ يفوقُ كلَّ اشتياقِ

    A torment like the torment of lovers

    And a yearning beyond all yearnings

  32. لم أجدْ قطُّ للفراق مَذاقاً

    كان عندي أمرَّ من ذا الفراق

    Never have I tasted separation

    As bitter as this separation.

  33. كيف يسلو مَن جسمه بقرى الرق

    ة رَهنٌ وقلبُه بالعراق

    How can one whose body is held hostage find peace

    While his heart is in Iraq?

  34. لم تُسَق للنوى مطاياهمُ إِلاّ

    ونفسي من بينهم في السِّياق

    Their mounts were not saddled unless

    My soul was saddled among them.

  35. عَمَرَت مهجتي بذكرِ أبي عم

    ران أيدٍ له ذواتُ اندفاق

    My passion was inhabited with memories of

    Abu Umran - hands outstretched to him.

  36. لم يكن حُسنُ ذلك الخلق يُنبي

    عنه إلا بأحسن الأخلاق

    The beauty of his nature did not suggest anything

    Other than the best morals.

  37. واتفاق الأقدار فيه حدا العا

    لَم في مدحه على الإتّفاق

    The harmony of fates in him reached the peak

    Of agreeing in praise of him.

  38. مولعٌ بالحياءِ والناسُ من هي

    بته مولعون بالإطراق

    Passionate about shyness while people are

    Passionate for his friendship.

  39. وإذا ما انتضت أناملُهُ المر

    هفَ أودى بالمرهفاتِ الرقاق

    When his gentle fingers strummed

    It did away with fine fabrics.

  40. والورى بين ضاحكٍ منه أو با

    كٍ إذا ما بكى بغيرِ مآقي

    Fate smiles at him or cries for him

    When it cries without calamity.

  41. قُسمَ الدرُ فيه شطرين هذا

    للمنايا وذاك للأرزاق

    Providence divided him into two halves

    One for death and one for sustenance.

  42. يا جواداً أفعالُه غُرَرٌ لا

    حت على أوجُه السجايا العتاق

    Oh generous one whose deeds are treasures

    Beneath solemn dignified faces

  43. ما شككنا في أن وجهَكَ بدرٌ

    لم يجزْ فيه قطُّ حُكُم المحاق

    We never doubted that you are a full moon

    Which will never face annihilation

  44. وكأني لمّا صرفتُ إليك ال

    مدح أطلقتُ منطقي من وَثاق

    And when I turned my praises to you

    I felt my expressions freed from shackles

  45. فمضى في البلاد شرقاً وغرباً

    وَرَوتْهُ الرُّواةُ في الآفاق

    So it traveled through the land far and wide

    Recited by storytellers everywhere

  46. ولقد قلتُ آنفاً لأبي الفت

    ح مقالاً بالنُّصح والإشفاق

    And recently I told Abu Al Fath

    Sincere advice with compassion

  47. ردْ حياضَ الهمام موسى بن عيسى

    تَغنَ منه بالرفق والأرفاق

    Bring back the dovecotes of bold Musa bin Isa

    You will benefit from kindness and grace

  48. ملكٌ ما هريقتِ المُزنُ إِلا

    من ندى جودِ كفهِ المُهَراق

    A king whom Al-Muzni only bled

    From the dew of his pouring palm

  49. أيها السيدُ الذي ما لمن لم

    يتمسَّك بحبلِهِ منْ خَلاق

    Oh master, for those ungrasping of your rope

    There is no creator

  50. إِنه ما علمتَ بُغيةُ أمثا

    لكَ في الظرف والمعاني الرقاق

    You knew not the goal of your peers

    In refinement and subtle meanings

  51. هاكها كالعروس في الحُسن إلا

    أنها زوِّجَتْ بغير صَداق

    Except she is wed with no dowry
