بالله قل لي أخَدُّكَ الأحمرْ

ألْيَنُ مسّاً أم خَدُّكَ الأصْفَر

In God's name, tell me, does your red cheek

Or your yellow one feel softer to the touch?

جعفرُ أحسنت في غنائِكَ بل

زدتَ على المحسنين يا جعفر

Jafar, you have excelled in your singing

You have surpassed those who excel, O Jafar!

أطربتنا لا خلوتَ من طربٍ

أسْكَرْتَ منّا من كانَ لا يَسْكَر

You have delighted us, you are never without delight

You have intoxicated those of us not prone to intoxication

لفظُكَ مِسْكٌ وعنبرٌ ومتى

قيسَ به المسك قطُّ والعنبر

Your voice is musk, ambergris, and whenever

Musk and ambergris are compared to it

لحظك سيفٌ وخنجرٌ ومتى

قيسَ بكَ السيفُ قطُّ والخنجر

Your glance is a sword, a dagger, and whenever

The sword and dagger are compared to you

أحسنتَ أحسنتَ في الغناءِ نعم

يا جوهراً ظلَّ ينثرُ الجوهر

You have excelled, excelled in singing indeed

O essence that scatters pearls as it flows!
