I am a man who has always taught manners
I stay settled in a house as long as it is welcoming
I do not covet my friend's seclusion
Nor do I indulge my soul if it wanders
I seek sustenance as a generous man would
Making requests gently and pleasantly
I milk only the pure camels
Not overworking the others’ udders
I have seen that if you encourage a noble youth
In a craft, he soon obliges
A slave does not seek high status
Nor gives you anything unless intimidated
Like a branded donkey, he only walks properly when beaten
The timid resident may be granted his living
Without packing his bags or moving his tent
I found no asset for people except
Good faith and pedigree when I reflected
He who travels around is deprived of sustenance
And whoever remains an émigré far from home
If a land sprouted my home, I was quick
To estrange myself from its people, even kin
No wailing bird could sway me
Nor a weeper when it wailed
