1. هيج الطرس كامِناً ثُم أَورى

    مِن سَنا الشَوق بَينَ جَنبي جَمرا

    The embers stirred dormant passion in me

    The pangs of yearning set ambers ablaze in my chest

  2. فَجرت أَدمُعي عَقيقاً لِقَوم

    لَست أَنساهُم وَإِن مت صَبرا

    So my tears flowed like gems for a people

    I'll never forget even if patience kills me

  3. كُلَّما مَرَّ ذكرهُم في ضَميري

    زدت مِن لَوعة الصَبابة حَرا

    Whenever the thought of them crosses my mind

    My burning agony grows ever more severe

  4. فَسَلوني عَما أَجن فُؤادي

    صاحب البَيت بِالَّذي فيهِ أَدرى

    So ask me what torments my heart

    The lord of the abode knows best what lies within

  5. يا كتِاباً أَتى وَكُنت سَقيماً

    فَشَفاني مِن السقام وَأَبرا

    O book that came when I was sick

    And cured me of my malady and mended me

  6. ذَكرتني نُقوشه كف بَحر

    كُلما مَد اصبَعاً صارَ نَهرا

    Your scripts reminded me of the palm of a sea

    Each finger extending to form a river

  7. ذا يَراع إذا دعته اللَيالي

    كانَ أَمضى مِن الحسام وَأَجرى

    A doe, when the nights would call it

    Swifter than a sword and faster flowing

  8. وَفَخار إِذا وَزَنت علاه

    بِنُجوم السَماء يَزداد فَخرا

    And pride - when weighed against

    The stars of the sky - grows ever prouder

  9. وَعُلوم إِذا دَجا الشَك يَوماً

    كانَ صُبحاً لِلمعضلات وَفَجرا

    And knowledge - when doubt creeps up one day

    Becomes the dawn for quandaries and daybreak

  10. وَنِظام بِهِ إِذا خاضَ فكري

    مِن مَعاني بِديعه خُضت بَحرا

    And order - when my thoughts were adrift

    In its wondrous meanings I swam an ocean

  11. وَمَتى ما بَدا رَأَينا عُقوداً

    وَالتَقَطنا مِن الصحيفة درا

    And whenever we perceived knots

    And gleaned pearly wisdoms from the pages

  12. تَتَباهى بِهِ الوُرود وَيَروي

    طيبه عَن كَتايب الشيح نَشرا

    The flowers boast of it and its fragrance

    From my beloved's epistles wafts its aroma

  13. فَإِذا ما تَلوته كَان شَهدا

    وَإِذا ما شَممته كانَ عطرا

    When recited it is like honey

    When smelled it is utmost fragrance

  14. بِسُطور عَلى اللجين أَضاءَت

    فَحَكَت عسجداً مُذاباً وَتبرا

    In lines on parchment it shone

    Melting prostrate in devotion and penance

  15. كُل لَفظ يَخاله السَمع قرطاً

    فيهِ مَعنى يَظنه العَقل سِحرا

    Each word that hearing deems a pearl

    Conceals a meaning that minds deem sorcery

  16. يا كَليم الفُؤاد رد عَين نَظم

    كُلما ذُقت كَأسَها صرت خضرا

    O intimate of my heart return the draft of poetry

    Each time I taste its cup I turn verdant

  17. فَإِذا ما بَدَت سَفينة صَبر

    قُم لَها وَاكسر السَفينة كَسرا

    And if the ship of patience sets sail

    Arise, break the ship with utmost vehemence

  18. وَبِسَيف الغَرام فَاقتل غُلاماً

    لا يَرى في هَوى المُحبين عُذرا

    And with love's sword slay the lad

    Who sees no excuse in lovers' fervor

  19. وَأقم لِلصبا جِدار غَرام

    كُلَّما رُمت نَقصه طالَ قَدرا

    And for passion raise a rampart wall

    Each time it's fired upon, it surges higher

  20. يا فَريد البَيان يا عَين فَضل

    مِن مَعانيه ماؤُها صار خَمرا

    O unequaled in eloquence, O eye of merit

    Whose meanings make its waters wine

  21. يا كَريم النجار يا فرع دوح

    هُوَ بِالفَضل وَالكَمالات أَحرى

    O generous carpenter, O branch of loftiness

    He is foremost in grace and virtues

  22. عُمري فَمن يُضاهيه أَصلاً

    عَدوي وَمَن يُباريه تَجرا

    My life - who equals his lineage?

    My foe - who competes with him in nobility?

  23. طَود حلم بِهِ رَسا كُل فلك

    فَتملى بِجوده وَاِستَقرا

    His forbearance anchored every sphere

    His generosity made them stable and stationary

  24. وَسماء مِن العُلوم أَضاءَت

    شَمسها فَاِنثَنَت نُجوماً وَبَدرا

    And a sky of knowledge illuminated

    Its sun dimmed the stars and the moon

  25. أَنتَ طَوَّقتَني مِن الدُر عقداً

    فاقَ في نَظمه القَلائد طرا

    You adorned me with a necklace of pearls

    Surpassing necklaces in its wondrous arrangement

  26. منن لَم أطق بِهن قِياماً

    لا وَلا العُمر يا أَخا العلم شُكرا

    Boons I cannot bear standing

    Nay, nor can life repay you, O peer of knowledge

  27. فَجَزاك لِلإله خَير جَزاء

    وَحَباك الإِله عزاً وَنَصرا

    So may God reward you the best reward

    And grant you might and triumph from Him

  28. ما رَأَينا صَحائف الشَوق تُبدي

    مِن قَوافي المَديح شَفعاً وَوترا

    Never did we see the epistles of longing

    Reveal rhyming praises, even or uneven lines

  29. ثُمَّ لا زَالَت المَعارف كنزاً

    وَلِمَن أَم دارك الرحب ذُخرا

    For your knowledge remains a treasure trove

    And a refuge for whom your abode welcomes
