1. بَكَت وَبَكى مِن أَجلِها العقد وَالنَحر

    فَتاة لَها مِن بَعد أَربعها عَشر

    The beads and sacrifice wept bitterly for her,

    A girl just past fourteen years,

  2. بَكَت مُذ رَأَت أَني عَزَمت عَلى النَوى

    وَأَنتَ وَنَظم الدَمع في خَدها نَثر

    She wept when she saw I was bent on leaving,

    And you, tears flowed down her cheek in streams.

  3. وَمُذ أَيقَنت بِالجد مني تَعَلقت

    بِثَوبي وَمِن أَردانِها يَعبق العطر

    When she knew I was serious she clung

    To my robe, and from her sleeves wafted perfume.

  4. وَقامَت وَضَمتني إلى الصَدر ضَمة

    لِصَدري بَدا مِن نار لَوعَتِها حر

    She got up and pressed me against her chest in an embrace,

    My chest appeared aflame from the burning of her agony.

  5. وَقالَت إِلى أَين المَسير وَإنَّني

    حَديثة عَهد فيكَ ما هَكَذا الهَجر

    She said, whither goes your journey when I

    Still new to our love, how can this be our parting?

  6. فَحانَت لِطَرفي عِندَ ذاكَ التفاتة

    وَفي مُهجَتي مِن نار فرقتها جَمر

    At that glance my eyes welled for her

    And in my mind her burning stirred up embers.

  7. وَقُلت أَهَجراً مِن مُحب وَشَيق

    يلذ لَهُ في حُبك النهي وَالأَمر

    I said, though loath to part from a lover and intimate

    Who delights in your love and command,

  8. يُريد رَحيلاً وَالغَرام بِقَلبه

    يُحاول ما لا تَفعل البيض وَالسُمر

    He wants to leave though love still grips his heart

    He tries what neither white nor black can achieve.

  9. وَلَكِنَّني يا بنت عَمرو بن مالك

    كَرهت دياري حينَ لذ لي القَفر

    But O daughter of Amr son of Malik,

    I hated my home when the wilderness enticed me.

  10. سَأَقطع ظَهر البر للبر قاصِداً

    وَأَركب لج البَحر كَي يَسمح البَحر

    I will traverse the desert aiming for more desert

    And ride the turbulent sea however stormy.

  11. عَلى سابق طَرف يُسابق طَرفه

    وَيَجري كَما تَجري بِسبسبها العفر

    On a swift steed whose sight challenges sights

    Dashing like a frightened ostrich with fluttering wings.

  12. عَدا مثل ما يَعدو الظَليم وَلَم يرد

    سوى الآل لا طل هُناكَ وَلا قَطر

    Galloping like a dark night without a moon,

    Its ships the wheeling planets, its lamps the blossoming stars.

  13. تَمطيته وَاللَيل كَالبَحر مُظلم

    سَفائنه الأَفلاك وَالأَنجُم الزُهر

    It struck the rocky ground until fountains sprang forth

    And from them surged waters though dawn had not come.

  14. رَمى صَخرة البَيداء حَتّى تَفَجرت

    لَهُ أَعيُن مِنها وَما طلع الفَجر

    It flew like a mother ostrich calling her chick

    Though it had fallen from the nest and could not return.

  15. وَطارَ كَما الوَرقاء حنت لِفَرخِها

    دَعَتهُ بِلا زاد وَقَد سَقَط الوكر

    I said gently, gently, for truly it is

    Beyond an eagle's reach however it soars.

  16. فَقُلت لَهُ مَهلاً رويدك إنَّها

    مَهامه عَن إِدراكها يقصر النسر

    It called may God forbid that I leave the beloved's abode

    For a house that, when I reach it, confirms my reward.

  17. فَنادى معاذ اللَه أَن أترك السرى

    لِدار إِذا ما جئتها ثبت الأَجر

    A breeze from their dwellings will surely guide me

    To the ruins, a secret spirit stirs in its dust.

  18. وَإِني لتهديني إِلى الربع نَفحة

    سَرَت مِن مَعاني تربهم وَلَها سر

    The light of the Leader Haidari before which

    Even beaming sun and full moon grow dim.

  19. وَنور الإِمام الحَيدري الَّذي عَنت

    لغرته الشَمس المُنيرة وَالبَدر

    His basil, how often the pure Ahmed inhaled

    Until from its sweet air his being blossomed.

  20. وَرَيحانه كَم شَمها الطهر أَحمد

    ففاحَ لَهُ مِن طيب عُنصره النَشر

    He bears the noble resemblance to half of Mohammed

    While the handsome, pure Fatimah won the rest.

  21. لَهُ الشبه السامي بنصف محمد

    وَفازَ بِباقيه الفَتى الحَسَن الطهر

    They divided the likeness of the Prophet by inheritance,

    Matchless pride to which all pride bows.

  22. هُما اقتَسَما شبه الرَسول وراثة

    وَناهيك مِن فَخر يدين لَهُ الفَخر

    They are the two dots beneath the Prophet's Ya,

    How often the Chosen's breast drew them near!

  23. هُما نقطتا ياء النبي فَطالَما

    مِن المُصطَفى المُختار ضمَهُما الصَدر

    They are the cooling of Batoul's eyes, and Haydar—

    How strange that time has wronged them so!

  24. هُما قرتا عين البتول وَحَيدر

    فَيا عَجَباً هَل كَيف غالهما الدَهر

    They are two springs of glory, knowledge and mastery,

    Lords of Youth's gardens for as long as lives memory.

  25. هُما نيرا مَجد وَعلم وَسَيدا

    شَباب جنان الخلد فيما أتى الذكر

    They are two warriors of war, lions of bravery,

    Life-giving rains of bounty when the clouds hold back their boon.

  26. هُما بَطلا حَرب وَلَيثا بَسالة

    وَغَيثا نَدى جود إِذا بخل القطر

    They are oceans of knowledge—if you draw from their tides

    You will be sated, and grasp in your palms a share of their excellence.

  27. هُما بَحر علم إِن وَردت مِياهه

    رويت وَفي كَفيك مِن فَضله در

    O Hussein the grandson, son of Mohammed

    Who was exalted above all in both worlds!

  28. ألا يا حُسين السبط يا ابن مُحمد

    وَمَن قَد سَما في العالمين لَهُ قَدر

    Your tragedy has clothed existence in mourning

    Until the end of time, though time itself expires.

  29. مصابك قَد أولى الوُجود كآبة

    مَدى الدَهر لا تَفنى وَإِن فني الدَهر

    In every heart burns a fire flaming from it,

    In every breast its flames kindle piercing heat—

  30. فَفي كُل قَلب مِنهُ نار توهج

    وَفي كُل صَدر مِن تَأججها حر

    Generosity wept because you fell to the earth

    Until now its tears flow unchecked by betrayal's sword.

  31. وَجود بَكى لَما سَقَطت عَلى الثَرى

    إِلى الآن لَم تنزف لِمدمعه الغَدر

    If the lashes wept water at your loss

    Then the horizon's eyes wept tears of crimson.

  32. لَئن بَكَت الأَجفان ماء لِفَقده

    فَتلكَ عُيون الأُفق أَدمعها حُمر

    The world was deprived when your blackness was hidden

    Good flipped to evil and order turned on its head.

  33. عَمت عَينه لَما تَوارى سَوادها

    فَضل عَن الخَيرات وَانعكسَ الأَمر

    Black tribulations have befallen the world

    Covering each heart in the darkness of their veil.

  34. مَصائب سود قَد أُصيبَ بِها الوَرى

    عَلى كُل قَلب مِن غشاوتها ستر

    A blazing affliction whose burning is unquenched

    With embers that smolder eternally in every limb.

  35. وَنار بلاء لَيسَ يَسكن حَرها

    لَها أَبَداً في كُل جارحة جَمر

    Were the Prophet's children denied life's water

    By oppressors? Exalted is He! Dire is the matter!

  36. أَتَمنَع صبيان النَبي عَلى ظما

    مِن الماء جل اللَه قَد عَظم الأَمر

    Were the unlawful banned from Euphrates' pool

    While the rightly guided know it as their Eden's font?

  37. أَتَمنَع مِن ماء الفُرات حَرَيمه

    وَحَوضهم المَورود يَعرفه الحشر

    By my soul! The Prophet's sons and honor

    Are my soul and honor for I am their thankful slave.

  38. بِنَفسي أَبناء الرَسول وَعرضه

    بِعرضي لأَني عَبدهم وَلي الفَخر

    Would that my neck had been struck instead of yours my Master

    For none like you can ever withstand war's flash flood.

  39. وَيا لَيت نَحري دون نَحرك سَيدي

    فَمثلك مَن يوقيه يَوم الوَغى النَحر

    Woe unto those who formed ranks against you

    Misled by malice and deceit's wicked hand.

  40. فَتَباً لأقوام عَلَيك تَحزبوا

    وَقادَهُم سوء الطَوية وَالمكر

    If they ruined your world O jewel of humanity

    They are surely astray while yours is the reward.

  41. لَئن أَفسَدوا دُنياك يا صَفوة الوَرى

    فَلا رَيب قَد ضَلوا وَتَم لَكَ الأَجر

    Against whom did their horses charge?

    The son of the one who was known for his striking hand at Badr!

  42. عَلى أَي مَرء قَد أَغارت خُيولهم

    عَلى ابن الَّذي في الحَرب تَعرفه بَدر

    The fearless warrior, seasoned fighter

    With intrepid raids and attacks that nothing could deter.

  43. عَلى القسور الضرغام وَالبَطل الَّذي

    لَهُ الغارة الشَعواء وَالفتكة البكر

    And were it not for destiny pulling at its reins

    Yazid's fear and trembling would have been much greater.

  44. وَلَولا مَقادير جَرَت بِعنانها

    لَغالَ يَزيد الرعب وَانفطر الشمر

    Hussein, Hussein, he came beseeching you humbly

    From an era whose fangs and claws seek to maim.

  45. حُسين حسين جاءَ يَرجوك ضارعاً

    لدَهر بِهِ مِن فتكه الناب وَالظفر

    And at daybreak, O people of the Prophet, he stood at your door

    While rivers of tears flowed from his every cheek.

  46. وَأَصبَح يا آل الرَسول بِبابكم

    وَأَدمعه في كُل خَد لَها نَهر

    Rise to help him, grant him sanctuary,

    Be his reinforcement, his aid is in dire need.

  47. فَقوموا بِهِ وَارعوا مَحل جواره

    وَكونوا لَهُ ذُخراً فَقَد أعوز الذخر

    By the station of your grandfather who was prayed upon and peace granted,

    May the Merciful be pleased with you at dawn's first light.

  48. عَلى جدكم صَلى وَسَلم رَبنا

    وَأَرضاكُم الرَحمَن ما طَلع الفَجر

    And by his noble companions whom He was pleased with,

    They were sturdy men made of stone.

  49. كَذاكَ عَلى الصَحب الكرام رضاؤه

    لأَنهُم قَوم قَساورة غر

    And may the Merciful grant you life until no star remains,

    And the scent of your earth remains after you are gone.

  50. وَحَياكُم الرَحمَن ما انقض كَوكَب

    وَما فاحَ مِن أَكناف أَرضكم عطر
