1. The pages' tawny hue struck me until

    My cure eluded every healer versed in charms.

  2. As though her markings were figures of magic,

    Lawful, ever casting its spell within the mind.

  3. The blind man gazes upon her openly,

    And the deaf man hears her in harmony.

  4. From her, the garden's nightingale stirred my sorrow,

    And stirred the fire of my heart and my longing.

  5. And the tongue of circumstance kept me company on her behalf,

    With its sweet speech after the embrace.

  6. So her anemones' fragrance has cleft my heart,

    And her nectar's liquid is the heart's cupbearer.

  7. I smelled her roses and took from her

    Necklaces of pearls from above the collarbones.

  8. The noble daughter of a discerning master, gallant and highborn,

    A scion of glory, his pavilion raised high.

  9. He has a pen as keen as a sword's edge,

    And it puts slender Indian swords to shame.

  10. His mind blazed and thus dispelled darkness

    With excellence that lasts through all time.

  11. The paper complained of the fire of brilliance until

    It became certain it would burn.

  12. The outpouring says, “Indeed, casting is my robe,

    And indeed goodness lies among the people of Iraq.”

  13. And the stringing of raindrops spoke from a station of truth:

    “The anklets of discernment are on my foot and my leg.”
