1. Praise be to God in morning and evening,

For favors and blessings bestowed in succession.

  2. Praise be to God—a praise by which I find light

In ignorance's darkness of doubt and misguidance.

  3. Praise be to God—a praise through which I seek refuge

On Resurrection Day from fire and scorching ground.

  4. Then blessings upon the light whose

Lightning flashes were kindled amid lights and radiance.

  5. Pure in lineage, through his mother and the best of fathers,

All the way to Adam and Eve, when his descent is traced.

  6. And the mine of mystery and revelation, through whom

At his sending, every hardship was eased with joy.

  7. The best of prophets, the most virtuous and purest

In heart, and the most patient in every hardship.

Like rain that spread torrents over a gravelly plain.

  9. His companions upheld it after him, and it became

Among them an inheritance from fathers to sons.

  10. So they built it up with keen-edged swords,

With God's aid, amid bold attackers and swift chargers.

  11. Monks by night; but when battle flared, there rose

From them vanguards of lights and rainstorms.

  12. To God belong those white faces—what deeds

Their swords wrought when unsheathed among enemies!

  13. Then ask Musaylima the Liar what

His cavalry encountered: worthy opponents, noble in deed.

  14. And how they swept across the Yarmuk and spread

Through Kisra's land, and settled in Tayma's palace.

The rose of the sacred law, for the far-off and distant.

  20. They did not oppose them, but clarified subtle points,

And with their guidance illumined every darkness.

  21. Like the master and mainstay, al-Nu'man, whose

Teachings spread through instruction and legal rulings.

  22. And Malik made the upright faith accessible through what

His Muwatta set forth in every region.

  23. And al-Shafi'i, cousin of al-Mustafa—to him belong

Landmarks of guidance for the clear-sighted observer.

  24. And Ahmad, guardian of the sacred law, patient through

His affliction—oh, what a beautiful ordeal!

  25. By their standing, and that of those who walk upon

Their path, heal my ailment, O Lord of the heights.

  26. The people of the paths, who have reached God

Along stairways of grace and blessing.

  27. Like al-Adili, whose virtues are too great

To be numbered by distinguishing and counting.

  28. The seekers' cave of refuge, Badr al-Din, our master,

Muhammad, who is adorned with the finest of names.

  29. His resplendent path is transmitted, traced by a chain

To ranks of sanctity and tidings,

  30. From our peerless shaykh, Abd Allah, with whom

Lofty attainments were sealed, so he became the dot of the letter kha.

  31. The gnostic al-Aydarusi, whose

Banners spread for the seekers, his intimate friends.

  32. From his shaykh, Jum'a, the master, for whom

Virtues were gathered, openly and in secret.

  33. And he received it from my master Ya'qub,

    From Jum'a the Elder,

  34. From my master, Shaykh Badr al-Din, the peerless among them,

    Muhammad al-Adili, the far-removed gnostic.
