1. Stand by the dwellings and the green grounds.

For some people bear glad tidings, and others receive them.

  2. And the nightingales of joy, whose warbling delights,

have come to you, some singing at length, others briefly.

  3. And let the singing birds be, for they

have come to you as singers and flute-players.

  4. And let the swaying winds be, for they

sway among silver-clad and gold-clad forms,

  5. each of graceful, swaying stature, as though it

gazes at you with its languid gaze.

  6. And the air has become joyful with glad tidings

of your brother, whose face is lovely to behold.

  7. He arrived with ample reward and safety,

    and happiness surpassing Caesar's happiness.

  8. It came to Abd Allah, possessor of bounty which

he has displayed, and of a noble, radiant face,

  9. and a shining brow, and a soul that

gave freely of its possessions—and I am no fabricator.

  10. Bestower of bounty and kindness in a time of ruin,

feasting guests on white and saffron-seasoned fare.

  11. He meets thousands face-to-face, and his motto is:

May my enemies slaughter me if I do not slaughter!

  12. So he showers them all with abundant benefits,

and surrounds them with incense-bearers and perfumers.

  13. So you see his processions like a dark night,

and you see his bounty like a rain-bearing cloud.

  14. And you see him standing in those assemblies,

like an unsheathed sword and a Samhari spearpoint.

  15. So if you drink the sweet water from his ocean,

it surely leaves you no need of flawless jewels.

  16. He learned noble conduct from noble men whose

deeds have become like the radiant dawn.

  17. From a clan whose houses' domes were built

for night visitors—what a clan it is!

  18. A house that traces its origin back to Qahtan,

descending in an unbroken chain from Himyar,

  19. from every noble chief and valiant lion,

traced to a lion and a mighty, fierce chief.

  20. A lineage now recounting glory through a chain of transmission,

from the finest ancestral root and noblest stock.

  21. O you whose girdle-knot has risen above al-Jawza,

until it overtopped the horns of Jupiter.

  22. You have become peerless, unique in your age,

and your gracious bounty among humankind is beyond measure.

  23. And if a noble virtue is sold or bought,

then someone else sells it, while you are the buyer.

  24. And when a dark time befalls us,

you light its blackness with a moon-bright face.

  25. I have not fully tallied your qualities, my lord;

so accept it, by your own worth, since I have praised you, and excuse me.

  26. So upon you, Abd Allah, be the finest greeting,

    unceasing, ever renewed and repeated.
