You have exalted standing before God,
You have great status with the Exalted God
and glory towering over all existence.
And eternal glory over existence
None in creation comes near you, O you
None in creation can match you, O one
in whose retinue Gabriel has walked.
Whom Gabriel himself followed
Had Moses, God's interlocutor, seen you one day, he would have become
If the Kalim had seen you one day, he would have become
a follower—indeed, Adam and Abraham, God's friend, as well.
A follower, as would Adam and the Friend
They did not rival you in lofty attainments, though each is
None has equaled you in high virtues, every
a perfect master, a prophet, a messenger.
Perfect master, prophet, messenger
Would that they had beheld your face one day,
If only they had witnessed your life one day
and seen a luminary and a light coursing about.
And seen a light and brilliance revolving
A gleam flashed from him, and it showed us
You let a glimpse of it shine, showing us
a clear path, and the way became plain.
A clear path, the way became visible
Longing's burning pangs seared me in secret.
Yearning overcame me, secretly
Would that I could reach the one I love.
If only I could reach the one I loved
I will not loosen the rein from the saddle of my longing,
I will not release the reins of my passion’s saddle
when the sanctuary and palm trees come into view for us.
For the sanctuary becomes visible to us, and the palm trees
A night when Time is generous—and from where
A night when time is forgiving, and from any
could generosity come, when he is a miser?
Comes forgiveness, and it is the stingy one
Debts arising from sins have caught up with me,
Sins have burdened me with debts
and Abu al-Qasim is the guarantor, the surety.
And Abul Qasim, the guarantor who covers them
