O sons of Nujayḥ, truly your mother
is a slave woman, and your father a contemptible fool.
She ate foul provisions and suffered indigestion
from them, while the dog sniffed her veil.
You claimed a bond of kinship with Mujāshiʿ
and with his paternal kinsmen, bearers of Zaʿb spears,
yet then you turned the shield’s back on us—you betrayed us.
Indeed, the ignoble, feckless rogue
grazes his stock from al-Jurayb through Lawāqiḥ,
then al-Sūbān; no herd is turned aside on his account,
until, once your bellies became infested with lice
and you saw your sons had reached manhood—
asses’ arses returning together from water,
with thaghām and ʿarab scrub sprouting about them—
those arses fill the hollow of Mutāliʿ with farting,
a bursting blast whose uproar the hills echo.
So carry on in the headlong arrogance of your course,
and drink at al-Dhunābah, brimful of fresh water.
