قد أصبح الحبل من أسماء مصروما

بعد ائتلافٍ وحب كان مكتوما

صدت وقالت أرى شيباً تفرعه

إن الشباب الذي يعلو الجراثيما

While youth ascending scales the bones like ivy

كأن ريقتها بعد الكرى اغتبقت

صرفاً تخيرها الحانون خرطوما

That tavern-keepers diluted from the tap

سلافة الدَّن مرفوعاً نصائبه

مقلَّد الغفو والريحان ملثوما

Raising the banner of past joys effaced

Cloaked in neglect, the basil sealed from sight

وقد ثوى نصف حولٍ أشهرا جددا

بباب أفأن يبتار السلاليما

As half a year in new moons fleeted by

At Afan's gate comparing steps and stairs

حتى تناولها صهباء صافية

يرشو التجار عليها والتراجيما

Until untouched she met him, chaste and pure

That traders sprinkle on, and well-rope pulleys

وسمحةٍ المشي شملال قطعت بها

أرضاً يحار بها الهادون ديموما

And lavishness of gait the sands engulfed

Wherein the perishing are oft astray

مهامهاً وخروقاً لا أنيس بها

إِلا الضوابح والأصداء والبُوما

Desolate spots, haunts where is no friend

Save echo, owl, and driving rain and lightning
