وكائن بالقَليب قَليب بدر

من الفتيان والعَرَبِ الكرامِ

There is in my heart a heart as bright as the moon

Among the youths and the generous Arabs

أيوعدُني ابن كبشة أن سنحيا

وكيف حياةُ أصداءٍ وهامِ

Does the son of Kibshah promise me that we will live

How can there be life of echoes and delirium

أيعجزُ أن يردَّ الموت عني

وينشرني إذا بليت عِظامي

Can he prevent death from me

And raise me when my bones have wasted away

ألا مَن مُبلغ الرحمن عنّى

بأني تارك شهرَ الصيامِ

Oh you who preach to the Merciful about me

That I have left the month of fasting

فقُل للّه يمنعني شرابي

وقل لله يمنعني طعامي

Tell God my drink detains me

Tell God my food detains me

تحاماك الحتوفُ وأفلتوني

أخو الملهوفِ والبطلُ المحامي

Destiny's calamities have afflicted me and let me go
