1. تَهَزَّأَت عِرسِيَ وَاِستَنكَرَت

    شَيبي فَفيها جَنَفٌ وَاِزوِرار

    My marriage was mocked and my grey hair condemned

    Therein lies spite and denial

  2. لا تُكثِري هُزءاً وَلا تَعجَبي

    فَلَيسَ بِالشَيبِ عَلى المَرءِ عار

    Do not mock overly or be astonished

    Grey hair brings a man no shame

  3. عَمرَكِ هَل تَدرينَ أَنَّ الفَتى

    شَبابُهُ ثَوبٌ عَلَيه مُعار

    Do you know your youth

    His youth is a borrowed garb

  4. وَلا أَرى مالاً إِذا لَم يَكُن

    زَغفٌ وَخَطّارٌ وَنَهدٌ مُغار

    I see no wealth unless there be

    Swaying, Adventure, and Protective Shelter

  5. مُستَشرِفُ القُطرَينِ عَبلُ الشَوى

    مُحَنَّبُ الرِجلَينِ فيهِ اِقوِرار

    With legs astride the two rain spouts

    Bent legs showing decrepitude

  6. وَأَطرُقُ الحانِيَّ في بَيتِهِ

    بِالشَربِ حَتّى تُستَباحَ العُقار

    The tavern keeper in his house

    Drinks until possessions are violated

  7. فَذاكَ عَصرٌ قَد خَلا وَالفَتى

    تُلوي لَياليهِ بِهِ وَالنَهار

    That time has passed and the youth

    Twists his nights and days with it

  8. لا يَنفَعُ الهارِبَ إيغالُهُ

    وَلا يُنَجّي ذا الحَذارِ الحَذار

    Fleeing does not benefit the fugitive

    Nor does caution deliver those who are cautious
