1. هل بعدَ بينكِ مِن جوىً لمودَّعِ

    ذهبَ اللقاءُ فهل له مِن مَرجِعِ

    Is there still affinity between us after parting,

    The meeting has gone, does it have a return?

  2. رثَّتْ حبالُ الوصلِ حتى اِنَّه

    لم يبقَ غيرُ رميمِها المتقطَّعِ

    The ropes of connection have worn out until

    Nothing remains but their scattered tatters.

  3. أسعادُ هلاّ يومَ نأيكِ زوَّدتْ

    عيناكِ عيني نظرةَ المستمتِعِ

    The days of your absence have given happiness,

    Your eyes gave mine a look of pleasure.

  4. أرجعتِ عن سُنَنِ الغرامِ وشرعِه

    ومِنَ العجائبِ رجعهُ المتشرَّع

    You turned away from the ways of love and its law,

    And it's of wonders that the robed one turned away.

  5. ما كانَ ضَّركِ والركائبُ قد سرتْ

    بكِ لو أَشَرْتِ بحاجبٍ واِصبَعِ

    It would not have harmed you, as the mounts traveled

    With you, had you gestured with an eyebrow and finger.

  6. توديعةً تُهدى الجوى في طَيَّها

    لشجٍ حليفِ تلهُّفٍ وتوجُّعِ

    A farewell gift given to affinity in its folds,

    To a yearning, burning heart and an aching soul.

  7. يستافُ أعرافَ الرَّياحِ كأنَّها

    هبَّتْ بنشرِ عبيركِ المتضَّوعِ

    It inhales the meadows of winds as if

    They blew spreading your perfumed scent.

  8. شامَ البروقَ على جوانبَ غُرَّبٍ

    فِلوى زرودَ فعالجٍ فالأجرَعِ

    Lightning flashed on the sides of a dusty sunset,

    Twisting branches, cliffs and bald mountainsides.

  9. فابتزَّهُ ومضُ البروقِ هجودَه

    ونأى بطيبِ كرى العيونِ الهُجَّعِ

    It dazzled him and the flash of lightning hid

    The scent of meadows from the sleepy eyes.

  10. ونضا قميصَ الصبرِ عنه حنينُه

    وولوعُه بسنا البروقِ اللمّعِ

    It uncovered the shirt of patience from him, his yearning

    And burning for the glistening lightning.

  11. لمعتْ فجددتِ الشجونَ وأجَّجَتْ

    نارَ الهوى العذريَّ بينَ الأضلُعِ

    You shone so you renewed the sorrows and provoked

    The innocent fire of love between the ribs.

  12. فذكرتُ اِيماضَ الثغورِ يلوحُ لي

    تحتَ الدُّجى مِن باردٍ مُسْتَنْقِعِ

    I remembered the valleys appearing to me

    Under the darkness, from a cold swamp.

  13. يُذكي برودُ رحيقِهِ حَرَّ الجوى

    لِحُشاشةٍ حَرَّى وقلبٍ موجَعِ

    Its cold nectar kindles the burning of love,

    To a fervently burning heart and aching soul.

  14. وغزالةٍ سنحتْ على غِرَرٍ لنا

    بينَ الجنابِ وبينَ ملعبِ لَعْلَعِ

    A gazelle trotted playfully before us

    Between the sides and a place for playing.

  15. مرَّتْ بنا حوراءُ يرشقُ لحظُها

    قلبُ المدلَّهِ مِن وراءِ البرقُعِ

    A beautiful maiden passed by, her glance

    Piercing the hearts of the infatuated from behind the veil.

  16. تشكو الحُليَّ وثقلَه لمّا سرتْ

    في سربِها تعطو بأجيدَ أتلَعِ

    She complains of the jewels being heavy when she walked

    In her flock, clad in fine garments.

  17. فَتَنَتْهُ ثم رَنَتْ اليَّ بلحظِها

    فَفُتِنْتُ فتنةَ مستهامٍ لا يَعي

    She seduced him, then glanced at me

    So I was seduced, an overwhelming infatuation.

  18. ورجعتُ بعدَ فراقِ أيامِ الهوى

    أصِفُ الغَوايةَ للمحبَّ المولَعِ

    And I returned after the days of love had passed

    To describe temptation to the passionate lover.

  19. دامي الجفونِ إذا الحمامةُ غرَّدتْ

    مِن فوقِ خُوْطِ البانةِ المتزعزِعِ

    My eyelids pour when the dove coos

    Above the shaking branches of the acacia.

  20. أسقي الديارَ وقد تباعدَ أهلُها

    عنها عزا ليَّ الدموعِ الهُمَّعِ

    I water the abodes after their people have parted

    Leaving me to shed copious tears of grief.

  21. وأخاطبُ الأطلالَ ليس يُجيبُني

    ما بينهنَّ سِوى الغُرابِ الأبقَعِ

    And I address the ruins but none answer me

    Among them except the iridescent raven.

  22. وهواتفٍ فوقَ الغصونِ يهيجُني

    منهنَّ تغريدُ الحمامِ السُّجَّعِ

    And voices above the branches provoke me

    Among them the cooing of the dozing dove.

  23. ناحتْ على عَذَبِ الفروعِ واِلفُها

    منها بمرأى فوقَهنَّ ومسمَعِ

    She moaned for the soft branches and was intimate with them

    Visible above them and audible.

  24. ما فارقتْ اِلفاً كما فارقتُهُ

    كلاّ ولا أجرتْ سواكبَ أدمعي

    She never parted with an intimate like she parted with me

    No, nor have my tears flowed like planets.

  25. قسماً ولا وجدَ المحبونَ الأولى

    وجدي بأشباهِ الظباءِ الرتَّعِ

    By God, the lovers of old never found

    My love for the gazelles’ young equaled.

  26. يا مربعَ الأحبابِ كم مِن وقفةٍ

    لي في عراصِكَ بينَ تلكَ الأربعِ

    O square of loved ones, how many times

    Have I stopped at your burial ground among those four.

  27. تهمي عليكَ مدامعي عِوضَ الحيا

    سَحّاً فتحسبُ انَّها مِن مَنْبَعِ

    My tears pour over you instead of life

    Flowing, so they're thought to be from a spring.

  28. أرعى حقوقَ أحبَّتي باذالةِ المد

    معِ المَصُونِ على تُرابِ المربعٍ

    I observe the rights of my loved ones by shedding tears

    For the buried, on the dust of the square.

  29. ومن العجائبِ أننَّي ارعى لهم

    عهدَ الوِدادِ وعهدُ مثليَ ما رُعي

    And of wonders is that I uphold for them

    The covenant of affection though mine is not kept.

  30. بانوا فما رقَّتْ جوانبُ عيشتي

    بعدَ البعادِ ولا صفا ليَ مشرَعي

    They showed themselves so the sides of my life

    Did not tremble after their absence, nor did my happiness subside.

  31. وعرامسٍ ذَرَعَتْ مُلاءَ مفازةٍ

    بعد الأحبَّةِ في اليبابِ البلقَعِ

    And bustards wandered the expanse of a barren land

    After the loved ones, in the motley desert.

  32. بُدْنٍ يطيرُ مِنَ الوحيف لُغامُها

    كالعُطْبِ مِن فوقِ الحصى واليَرمَعِ

    hyenas flying from thepacks, their ululations

    Like bamboo above pebbles and lava fields.

  33. زَفَّتْ كما زفَّ النعامُ إلى النقا

    في المَرْتِ تهزأُ بالرَّياحِ الأربَعِ

    They trotted as ostriches trot to the watering place

    Mocking the four winds in the meadow.

  34. عافتْ جميمَ النبتِ مِن شوقٍ الى

    أعطانِهنَّ به وطيبَ المكرَعِ

    They avoided the vegetation from yearning for

    Its lush plants and good grazing lands.

  35. وتبدلتْ مِن بعدِ طيبِ مُناخِها

    في البيدِ كُرْهاً بالمُناخِ الجَعْجَعِ

    And after its good climate they changed

    To hating the raging climate in the wasteland.

  36. تهوى وفوقَ ذُرى الغواربِ عصبةٌ

    مُتَمَلْمِلُونَ على المطيَّ الظُّلَّعِ

    A group sways above the dust of the hyenas

    Swaying on the tall-necked camel.

  37. متمايلون مِنَ الكَلالِ كأنَّما

    صُبِحوا بمشمولِ المُدامِ مشعشَعِ

    Swaying from fatigue as if they had

    Become intoxicated by the flowing wine.

  38. دَعَموا رقابَهمُ على كيرانِها

    قبلَ الصباحِ مِنَ الكرى بالأذْرُعِ

    They propped their necks on its litters

    Before dawn, returning to their loved ones.

  39. حتى أتوا دارَ الأحبَّةِ والهوى

    يَهدِي الرَّكابَ إلى الطريقِ المَهْيَعِ

    Until they reached the abode of loved ones and passion

    Guiding the riders to the twisting path.

  40. وصَلُوا وكم أبقى السُّرى منِ نحبِهمْ

    في الهَجْلِ نَهْباً للذَّئابِ الجُوَّعِ

    They arrived while the packs had left much of their flesh

    As prey for the famished wolves.
