1. حرامٌ على الجفنِ القريحِ منامُه

    اِذا بانَ مَنْ تهوى وغزَّ لِمامُهُ

    It is forbidden for the eyelids to sleep

    When the beloved appears unveiled

  2. حياةُ الفتى

    والعيسُ تُحدَجُ للنوى

    The life of a young man

    And time passes gathering wishes

  3. حِمامٌ واِنْ لم يُقضَ فيها حِمامُهُ

    ومضنًى بكى في الربعِ حتى بكى له

    A dove even if it doesn’t coo there

    The lover wept in the valley until he wept for him

  4. به رحمةً عُذّالُهُ وسَقامُهُ

    به لاعجٌ مِن شدَّةِ الوجدِ مُقلِقُ

    Out of mercy, his sickness and his grief comforted him

    He cannot rest from intense passion

  5. يزيدُ على بعدِ المزارِ ضِرامُهُ

    غريمُ الهوى العذريِّ في كلَّ حالةٍ

    His longing increases beyond visiting the tomb

    The love-sick lover whatever his state

  6. على ما يراهُ وجدُهُ وغرامُهُ

    حمامَ الحِمى قلْ ليهلِ البانُ مثمرٌ

    According to what he sees, his passion and his love

    Say to the one who came to the valley, it became fruitful

  7. وويحَ المُنى أن لم يُحِبني حَمامُهُ

    فهذا الحِمى والبانُ والأثلُ قد بدا

    Alas if he didn’t love me, his dove

    So this valley, the visitor and the family appeared

  8. لعيني وأين المنحنى وخيامُهُ

    وأين غزالٌ كان يهدي مع الصَّبا اليَّ

    To my eyes - where is the bent one and his tents?

    And where is the gazelle who used to visit me with the morning breeze

  9. إذا ما بانَ عنّي سلامُهُ

    يُذكِّرنُي ومض البروقِ اِذا بدتْ

    When he bid me farewell

    The lightning reminds me of his smile

  10. تلوحُ على وادي الأراكَ ابتسامُهُ

    وألمحُ ذاكَ الثغرَ يلمعُ برقُه

    When it shines over the valley of Al-Arak

    I catch a glimpse of that smiling mouth

  11. متى حُطَّ عن درِّ الثنايا لِثامُهُ

    له مِن غزالِ الرملِ جيدٌ ومقلةٌ

    Whenever the veil over his soft neck is lifted

    He has the neck and forehead of a gazelle of the sands

  12. وما شانَهُ اِذ ليس فيه بُغامُهُ

    فكلُّ كلامٍ في الحشا مِن حديثهِ

    What matters that he has no antlers?

    Any discourse in his praise

  13. اِذا ذُكِرَتْ ألفاظُه وكلامُهُ

    مِنَ الحور وَدَّ البدرُ مِن فرطِ حسنهِ

    When his words and speech are remembered

    The full moon is jealous of his beauty

  14. وفرطِ الحيا لوعادَ وهو غلامُهُ

    فلم أُعطِ يوماً للعذولِ مسامعي

    And the splendor of his shyness when he was a boy

    I never lent my ears to those who blamed him

  15. عليه ولم يَثنِ الغرامَ ملامُهُ

    هو البدرُ إلا أنَّه غيرُ خائفٍ

    And his love never blamed me for passion

    He is the full moon but without fear

  16. مِنَ النقصِ يوماً حين تمَّ تمامُهُ

    وأين الحِمى يبدو أنيقاً جميمُه

    Of loss when he reached fullness

    Where are the beautiful oases appearing?

  17. ومنهَلهُ الفياضُ تطغى جِمامُهُ

    وتلكَ الرياضُ الفيحُ فيه وزهرُها

    Their springs overflowing with water

    And those gardens blooming with flowers

  18. تَفتَّحُ عن مثلِ الثغورِ كِمامُهُ

    وخرقٍ أزرناه النجائبَ سُهَّما

    That open like smiling mouths

    And the gazelles we hunted tirelessly

  19. يُسابِقُها مِن كلَّ مَرْتٍ نعامُهُ

    فتنأى النعامَ الرُّبدَ فيه لواغباً

    Chased by their young everywhere

    The gazelles avoid the barren land

  20. واِنْ بَعُدَتْ أعوارُه وأكامُهُ

    أمامَ المطايا شاهقُ الكُورِ أهوجٌ

    Even if their dens are far

    In front of the horses, lofty and long-necked

  21. تَخَمَّطَ أن يَثنيهِ عنه خِطامُهُ

    تناثرَ في البيداءِ وردُ خِفافِه

    Trying in vain to break free of the bridle

    His light steps scattering roses in the desert

  22. وَيندِفُ ندفَ البُرسِ فيها لُغامُهُ

    بحيث تراه في الفلاةِ كأنَّما

    And partridges cooing softly

    As if my passion and love for him

  23. تقاضاه وجدي بالحِمى وغرامُهُ

    هما سَبَبا ذاكَ التماسكِ بعدَما

    Were rewarding me there in the valley

    They are the reason for that attachment

  24. أضرَّ به اِرقالُه ودوامُهُ

    يناحلُه في البيدِ وهو مُهربِدٌ

    After wandering and insomnia exhausted him

    He challenges me in the wilderness weakened

  25. الى الجِزعِ يشأى الواخداتِ زِمامُهُ

    ودارٍ وقفنا بعدَما بانَ أهلُها

    Fleeing to the hills where the deer roam

    At the ruins of an abandoned camp

  26. بها فسقاها دمعُ جفني غمامُهُ

    حبستُ بها صحبي مِن الوجدِ لاثماً

    I shed tears saturating the soil

    There I detained my friends in passion

  27. ثرى منزلٍ يَشفي الغليلَ التثامُهُ

    مُسائلَ أطلالٍِ صحبتُ بها الهوى

    The dust of a dwelling that soothed our thirst

    I conversed with the ruins of my love

  28. حليفايَ فيهاعهدُهُ وذِمامُهُ

    وليلٍ عقدتُ الطرفَ وجداً بنجمهِ

    Loyal to our pact and oath

    On a night when I stayed up grieving, the stars appeared

  29. وقد بانَ مَنْ أهوى وعزَّ مَرامُهُ

    فيا حارِ أن جئتَ العقيقَ فحيِّهِ

    And my beloved, the fulfiller of hopes, appeared

    So greetings to you who came to Al-Uqayq

  30. واِنْ بانَ عنه أهلُه وكِرامُهُ

    تحيِّةَ مشغوفِ الفؤادِ مُلَدَّدٍ

    Even if its people and nobles are gone

    Greetings from a heart-stricken lover

  31. يُروِّعُه اِصباحُه وظلامُهُ

    اِذا ذُكِرَ الأحبابُ أثجمَ دمعُه

    Frightened by dawn and darkness when remembered

    When the beloveds are remembered, his tears are silenced

  32. وطالَ على بالي الرسومِ انسجامُهُ

    وأنشدَ فيها مِن نتائجِ فكرِه

    And the threads of harmony entwine in my mind

    And he recited from the fruits of his thoughts

  33. فريداً تساوى قَدُّهُ وقَوامُهُ

    يُحيِّرُ أربابَ النظيمِ إذا بدا

    A unique poem, stately in its rhythm

    It astounds the composers of verse when it appears

  34. وقد راقَ في سلكِ القريضِ نظامُهُ

    ويفعلُ في عقلِ الأريبِ سماعُهُ

    Exquisite in the genre of elegy

    And hearing it intoxicates the mind

  35. من السكرِ ما لم تستطعْهُ مُدامُهُ

    As no wine could ever do
