1. أبارقاً شِمتَه بالغَورِ لمّاحا

    أهدَى لقلبِكَ أشجاناً وأتراحا

    He twinkled his lightning in the darkness as a flirt,

    Bringing sorrows and sighs as gifts to your heart,

  2. بُدَّلْتَهُ بعدَماقد كنتَ مغتبطاً

    بالقربِ تصحبُ راحاتٍ وأفراحا

    After making you joyful, he changed you,

    With nearness, comfort and joy accompany each other,

  3. ما أنتَ أوَّلَ مَنْ أودَى بمهجتِهِ

    جِدُّ الغرامِ وخَالَ الوجدَ مزّاحا

    You are not the first one whose mind was corrupted by love,

    The essence of passion and the confidant of ecstasy jest,

  4. ذقِ النميرَ الذي استعذبتَ مشربَه

    جهلاً فأصبحتَ لّما غاضَ مُلتاحا

    Taste the bitter cup that you found sweet out of ignorance,

    So when it was too late you found it bitter and harsh,

  5. هذا دواؤكَ كم لبَّيتَ داعيَه

    لمّا دعاكَ وما استرشدتَ نُصّاحا

    This is your remedy, though you answered his call,

    When he called you, you did not follow advice,

  6. ركِبتَ مِن وَلَهٍ بحرَ المنى غَرَراً

    وطالما جمحَ المغرورُ أو طاحا

    Out of infatuation, you rode the sea of wishes blindly,

    And the arrogant always stumble and fall,

  7. حتى أعادكَ ما تنفكُّ مِن وَلَهٍ

    تسبُّ طرفاً إلى الأحبابِ طَمّاحا

    Until what you cannot stop wishing returned you

    To blame the beloved flirtatiously,

  8. تهيمُ عندَ طلوع الصبحِ مِن أَرَحٍ

    يَهديهِ بَرْدُ نسيمِ الروضِ نَفّاحا

    You wander at dawn, discomforted,

    The garden's breeze greeting you coolly at daybreak,

  9. تُبدي ارتياحاً إذا استنشقتَ نفحتَه

    حتى كأنَّكَ قد عاطيتَه الراحا

    You show contentment when you smell its fragrance,

    As if it has relieved all your troubles,

  10. ما مزنةٌ بتُّ أستجدي مدامِعُها

    وباتَ منها هزيمُ الغيثِ سَحّاحا

    The clouds were not stingy with their tears one day,

    Rain poured heavier than my tears on the meadows,

  11. مُثْعَنْجِراً ملأَ الغيطانَ زاخِرُه

    فساخَ في الأرضِ ريّاً بعدَما ساحا

    The downpour filled the valleys abundantly,

    Spreading moisture in the land after wandering,

  12. أحيا نباتاً قلتْهُ السحبُ آونَةً

    كأنّما ردَّ فيهِ القَطْرُ أرواحا

    Reviving plants that the clouds had diminished for a while,

    As if the drops restored life into them,

  13. يوماً بأغزرَ مِن دمعي على دِمَنٍ

    عَفَّى الغمامُ مغانيِهنَّ دَلاَّحا

    With tears more abundant than mine, over pastures

    Where the clouds had wailed their melodies,

  14. تَهمي إذا ما ظلامُ الليلِ مدَّ على

    عِطفيهِ مِن حِندسِ الظلماءِ أمساحا

    You rush if the darkness of night spreads

    Its robes of deep darkness like crocodiles,

  15. واِنْ تألَّقَ برقُ المزنِ هيَّجَني

    اِذا تبدَّى كنصلِ السيفِ أو لاحا

    And if the flash of lightning rouses me,

    Appearing like an unsheathed sword or gleaming,

  16. يهتزُّ بينَ سَواري السحبِ منتصباً

    أغرَّ أبلجَ للسارينَ وضّاحا

    It sways erect between the clouds’ bracelets,

    More beautiful and brighter than torches,

  17. أشيمُه فَيَنِدُّ الدمعُ مِن حَرَقٍ

    والدمعُ ما زالَ للمشتاقِ فضّاحا

    I perceive its fragrance and tears pour out ardently,

    For the longing, tears always reveal,

  18. يُذكي الهديلُ غرامي عندَ وقفتِهِ

    مِنَ الحنينِ على الأغصانِ صدّاحا

    The streams' murmur awakens my passion when pausing,

    With yearning, moaning from the branches,

  19. فأنثَني للهيبِ الشوقِ في كَبِدي

    نضّاخُ دمعٍ لنارِ الشوقِ نَضّاحا

    So the flames of ardent love bend me,

    My streaming tears feeding the fires of passion,

  20. أبكي ولم أدرِ مِن حُزْنٍ ومِن وَلَهٍ

    غنَّى الحمامُ على الباناتِ أو ناحا

    I cry but do not know whether from sorrow or craze,

    The doves cooed to the maidens or lamented,

  21. وأسترُ الوجدَ والتَّذكارُ يَفْضَحُهُ

    اِذا تنسَّمَ عَرْفُ الرَّندِ أو فاحا

    And ecstasy exposes my love when the scent of flowers wafts,

    If the fragrance of perfume spreads or airs,

  22. يَحكي قلائدَ سلمى طيبُ هبَّتِهَ

    أيامَ كنتُ لعَرْفِ الوصلِ مُمتاحا

    Its sweet aroma tells the story of Salma's necklaces,

    When I had access to the fragrance of union,

  23. أسري اليها قريرَ العينِ مبتسماً

    وأنثني مِن رُضابِ الثغرِ مُرتاحا

    I would walk to her with a twinkling eye, smiling,

    And incline, pleased, from the stimulation of the lips,

  24. اِذا ضللتُ هداني برقُ مبسمِها

    حتى كأني قد استنورتُ مِصباحا

    If I lost my way, the lightening of her smile guided me,

    As if I gained illumination from a lamp,

  25. كأنَّني مِن سرورٍ نالني ثَمِلٌ

    قد عُلَّ مِنْ عنبرىَّ الراحِ أقداحا

    As if from joy, I gained perfect happiness,

    As if I drank many toasts of the wine of tranquility,

  26. فاعتضتُ مِن بعدِه بُعداً على مَضَضٍ

    والدهرُ ما زالَ منّاعاً ومنّاحا

    After that, I suffered the misery of distance,

    While fate persisted in denial and prevention,

  27. يا منزلاً نحوَه للنجبِ مُنْعَرَجٌ

    في البيدِ يذعرنَ رضراضاً وصُفّاحا

    O dwellings! The paths to them twisted for the noble,

    Frightening gazelles in the wilderness, terrified and whistling,

  28. يقطعنَ أعراضَها غُلْبَ الرقابِ الى

    مرمًى يُعيدُ عِتاقَ العيسِ أشباحا

    Severing their necks by tyranny, to a place

    Where the ghosts of the slain return,

  29. خوصُ العيونِ بَراها الخَرْقُ لاغبةً

    في الخُطْمِ تسري قصارَ الخطوِ أطلاحا

    The imprisonment of eyes made them reveal their secret,

    Walking with short steps, stumbling in cover,

  30. حياكَ منّي حَيا دمعي بمندَفِقٍ

    أمسى عليكَ مُلِثُّ القَطْرِ سفّاحا

    Greetings to you from me, whose pouring tears

    Have become shedders of blood, harming you,

  31. فما ترى بعدَ أن يسقيكَ وابِلُه

    مِن صَّيبِ الجَوْدِ مُلتاحا ومُجتاحا

    What do you see after its downpour has quenched you,

    With the rain of generosity, soaked and flooded?

  32. عهدي بمغناكَ تُصبيني نضارتُه

    ضحيانَ منفسحَ الأرجاءِ فيّاحا

    My covenant with your beauty, its freshness restores me,

    A blossoming meadow spreading fragrance,

  33. فكيفَ أبلتْ صروفُ الدهرِ جدَّتَه

    وكيفَ أصبحَ روضُ اللهوِ مُنصاحا

    So how did the turns of fate change it?

    And how did the garden of joy become desolate?

  34. وكيفَ أبلسَ حتى جئتُ أسألُه

    فما أجابَ واِنْ اسهبتُ اِلحاحا

    And how did it become so miserable that I came to ask it,

    But it did not answer, however much I implored?

  35. لا ذنبَ لِلجَلْدِ يُبدي ما يكابِدُه

    من الفراقِ إذا ما ناحَ أو باحا

    No blame to the skin that shows what it suffers

    From separation, if it moans or cries,

  36. يا ناقِدَ الدرِ أصبتْهُ قلائدُه

    وموضحَ الكلماتِ الغرَّ ايضاحا

    O you who criticize poetry! You hit its necklaces,

    Clarifying words that were puzzling,

  37. خُذها إليكَ مِنَ الاِقواءِ سالمةً

    تعيدُ بحرَ بُناةِ الشَّعرِ ضَحْضاحا

    Take them safely to yourself, strengthened,

    To return the sea of eloquence strongly gushing,

  38. قصائدٌ تُفْحِمُ المِنطيقَ شرَّدُها

    عِيّاً واِنْ كانَ جزلَ القولِ مَدّاحا

    Poems that silence the most eloquent, scattered,

    Whether he is grave or panegyrizing,

  39. يُخَجَّلُ الأفوهَ الأودىَّ ناظِمُها

    وجَرْوَلاً وجريراً والطَّرِمّاحا

    Their composer shames the most hostile mouths,

    And others like Jarwal and Jarir and al-Tirmidhi,

  40. اِذا تغزَّلَ ردَّ الوُرْقَ ساجعةً

    واِنْ تنكَّرَ سَدَّ الأّفقَ أرماحا

    If he composes amorously, the leaves shyly withdraw,

    And if he denies, the horizons brim with spears.
