I have grieved enough, my tears telling you what I have

While friends have journeyed from my place in Nejd

How could I, who was trusted with love

Now talk of things long forgotten

I blame them not for their betrayal

Knowing reproach helps not with love

So cease your blame, don't blame me

Neither are right in love or reason

For longing has become familiar to my heart

And anguish has become mine alone

I yearn for Layla, and if her love were lost

I would wander restless to distant India

The days watered my tears when rainclouds called

    Stirred by a roving thunderclap

When lightning flashed, the rainclouds left

Dark skies, no solace from the rain

A time we spent joyfully, hours that were

Nothing but the season of flowers

Would that days gone by might return

No return for what is past and gone

A turtledove sang from the acacia and wild myrtle

Yearning, though far from where the herd had wandered

How if she were to see the camp of her beloved

Added to the length of her great estrangement

The stumbling roe at the acacia copse

Saying a secret farewell, my tears like scattering pearls

Sometimes I see her languishing gaze

Other times I hear her moan and bleat

I returned, joined to my anguish and sorrow

The day the lonely one left from Erjae the unique

I ask the abode about the time of their return

Though I have no promise of their returning

The arrogant hyena still mocks with madness

Swayed by conceit from Qussub's bending branches

    Time has lengthened between us

Nothing has changed for him or me

As if a pact with the One on High

That I should have from them nothing while I live

I roused the sorrows of friends with a cure

And stirred the saddled she-camels with conversation

I visited the land of the raiders one evening

So the murmur of love returned to guide my heart

With grief for days of youth now past

And tears for a life now gone from them in plenty

The ruined abode lent me its sickness

And I returned it, for sickness mostly spreads

Oh heart, you have become hardened to love

    Not called before that hardened

If not hardened, after them you'd not have

Remained, not even if made of deaf rock

Who came to me distraught after you

I came to love, and who comes distraught after me

Who passes the night watering it with copious tears

Flowing down upon that dusty soil

And sees the flashing lightning fold itself

Upon ribs in which there remains only passion

When the fever of love overcomes him

I see him embrace the ruins of the dwellings aflame

Cooling the torment of his agony with ruins

While challenging the fire of passion in that coolness

No keen sword that repels assaults is ever

Feared like the Indian straight and narrow

When embroiled in the battle, a striker

Passing by the gathering of lions

He sees death lying in wait for him

    Watching him between sharp edges

When my utterances come forth eloquently formed

Into poetry where none can match me

Every phrase therein is a string of pearls

Every ode therein contains the thread of pearls
